My boyfriend and I went on a little date to Jinsim Castella in Gurae-dong. The packaging was so pretty and you can order individually or by the box, so I thought this would be a good reference for anyone looking for Children's Day gifts or small group snack orders.

How to order and take out at Jinsim Castella

When you walk in, you order through a kiosk. It's takeout only — no seating.

Since this place is close to Gurae Station, I think it's a great spot to grab something to package up for a Children's Day gift or an office thank-you gift.

How long does the castella keep, and when do flavors sell out?

The store had instructions posted on how to enjoy the castella best, so I took photos in case you want the storage tips too. Since it's a giant castella, you probably won't finish it all at once, so it's good to know: about 6 days refrigerated, 1 month frozen. If you've already cut into it, they recommend eating it as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, the day I visited, only the whipped cream castella or the basic castella were available to order. If you have a specific flavor in mind, I'd recommend calling ahead to check — they can sell out of ingredients.

Choosing the Oreo whipped cream castella

Apparently you can order the whipped cream castella half-and-half. You can also add extra whipped cream or swap the cream flavor separately. My boyfriend and I went back and forth, but since I love the crunch of Oreo cookies, I went straight for the Oreo cream on the menu. There were so many other cream options too — basic whipped cream, chocolate, Oreo, Lotus, injeolmi (sweet rice cake), salted caramel, apple cinnamon, and Earl Grey.

We also took out two drinks to go with the castella — an iced americano and a strawberry latte. The castella is quite sweet, so I think the iced americano was a lighter, nicer pairing. There are other drink options too, so pick whatever suits your taste.

Tasting the Oreo cream castella at home

I unboxed what we bought from Jinsim Castella Gimpo Gurae branch once we got home.

Since it's a whipped cream castella, there was a huge amount of cream packed in. It's a castella, so carrying it around left a slight wrinkle on top, which was a bit of a shame, but overall the bread looked great visually. I could see why it's recommended as a gift or thank-you item in Gurae-dong.

Since it was Oreo whipped cream, the sweetness felt different from the basic whipped cream — not a common flavor, and really tasty. It was so good that I found myself wondering how the other flavors would taste. My boyfriend tried it too and said it was better than he expected. This is a giant castella that even people who don't usually like bread would enjoy.

As for texture, small castellas at regular bakeries tend to be soft but slightly dry and crumbly, whereas Jinsim Castella is moist and soft.

I usually like bread, so I really wanted to visit, but as luck would have it, the day I went happened to be a day they'd run out of ingredients, so I couldn't buy any other flavors — that was disappointing. I visited around 5pm on a weekend and they were out. If there's a specific flavor you really want, I think it's necessary to call ahead and check before visiting. Still, the bread at Jinsim Castella was really soft and delicious. I'd like to try the chocolate flavor next time, so I'd say I'm about 70% likely to go back.
