I was looking for something to do with my kid over the weekend and ended up seeing a magic show in Gwanggyo, Suwon. The show was Magic & Joy by Mirinae Magic Theater. Honestly, since it's a kids' show, I was a little worried about how focused my child would actually be. Here's our review of the Magic & Joy children's magic show in Gwanggyo.

How to get to Galleria Department Store Gwanggyo in Suwon

Walking route from Gwanggyojungang Station on the Sinbundang Line to Galleria Department Store

You can reach Galleria Department Store Gwanggyo from Gwanggyojungang Station on the Sinbundang Line.

  • ✔️ Subway: Get off at Gwanggyojungang Station (Sinbundang Line), take Exit 4, and walk toward Galleria Department Store — about 10 minutes on foot.
  • ✔️ Bus: Get off at Suwon Convention Center·Lotte Outlet or Suwon Convention Center·Galleria Gwanggyo·Jungheung S-Class stop. Routes 7, 18, 19, 20, 32-3, 32-4, 88-1, 670, and 720-3 all run there.

The show we saw was the Saturday 2pm session. Timing really matters when you're going to a show with a kid, and having a Saturday afternoon slot was great — we had lunch first and then headed over to the show.

What made it especially convenient was that the magic show is inside Galleria Department Store Gwanggyo itself. Parking is free for 3 hours too, which was plenty if you're just watching the show and heading straight out. Since you can also fit in a meal or shopping before or after, it made for a nice full weekend outing rather than just one activity and home. We ended up wandering around the department store after the show before heading back.

What happens in the show: birds, goldfish and audience participation

Being a children's magic show, Magic & Joy had one trick after another that kids would find interesting. It wasn't just magic performed on stage — there were parts where the audience reacted and participated too, so kids naturally got drawn into the show instead of getting bored.

My kid is pretty curious by nature, and every time the magician showed something new, her eyes went wide. There were a lot of moments that make kids go "wait, how did that happen?" so she stared for a long while, haha.

Can a 4-year-old sit through the whole Magic & Joy show?

Honestly, this is the part I was most happy about with this show. My 4-year-old focused way better than I expected. When you take a little kid to a performance, you always worry they'll get bored halfway through or want to wander off.

Before the show, I wondered, "can she really sit still for almost an hour?" But once it started, she stayed locked in the whole time watching the tricks, haha. I think the birds and goldfish that kept appearing in between helped a lot too.

My personal favorite was the shadow show — it felt like something I could actually learn to do with a bit of practice.

Reactions to kids' shows probably vary depending on the child's personality and age, but I think it's plenty enjoyable for preschoolers. Of course every kid is different, but mine stayed in her seat all the way to the end. I think what she enjoyed most was that there were parts where kids could react or participate directly, rather than just watching magic performed on stage.

The magic book handed out after the show, and playing with it at home

After the Magic & Joy show ended, we even got a magic book to take home. I thought the show was the whole thing, but apparently not.

I honestly assumed it would just be a small souvenir from the venue, but my kid ended up loving it way more than expected. Even at home, she kept flipping through the magic book and trying to show her dad the tricks she'd seen, haha. "Dad, look at this!" she'd say while trying to perform the tricks — it was a little funny and pretty adorable watching from the side. 😂

Still, being able to replay at home what amazed her at the theater meant the show's afterglow lasted a lot longer for her. I liked that it wasn't just one show and done — she got to keep playing at being a little magician at home and naturally stayed interested in magic.

After the magic show, we went to Lotte Mall and even hit up a kids' café before heading home. If you're in Suwon and wondering what to do over the weekend with a preschooler, I'd recommend this children's magic show.
