Aewol ocean-view noodle restaurant with no wait at lunch: Handam Guksu
In short
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a pork noodle and rice soup restaurant on Aewol-ro in Aewol, Jeju, where floor-to-ceiling windows look straight out to the ocean. On a weekday afternoon visit, the order was lean pork rice soup, dongchimi bibim noodles and dombe naengsuyuk, with side dishes brought over from the self-serve bar. Even with the room full, noodle dishes moved tables quickly enough at Handam Guksu to sit down without waiting.

When you picture a trip to Jeju, the scene that comes to mind first is probably that wide-open emerald sea, paired with delicious local food eaten while looking at it. This time I went somewhere that let me take in Jeju's stunning coastline while also filling up properly. Here's my honest review of Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a place known for having both a gorgeous view and great food.

Where is Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, and what are the hours?

Noodle dishes are one of those must-eat local foods when you're in Jeju. Among travelers especially, Aewol's pork noodle soup is always a favorite thanks to its rich, deep broth without any gaminess and its chewy noodles. From the moment I arrived, the clean, sleek exterior caught my eye.

Even though it was a weekday, the place was buzzing with customers. Since it's noodle food, turnover was fast despite the crowd, which I really appreciated.

What are the ocean-view window seats like?
The moment I stepped inside Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, the ocean view stretching out beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows made me gasp. It's a spot that boasts a perfect view for dining while looking out at the sea, and my mood was already great before I even sat down.

The other seats were clean too, with plenty of space between tables — another plus.

The three dishes ordered at Handam Guksu
After some deliberation, I went ahead and ordered a spread of the restaurant's most-anticipated signature dishes. My picks for the day were lean pork rice soup with generous Jeju pork and a rich bone broth, dongchimi bibim noodles (mixed noodles in cold radish water kimchi broth) with cool dongchimi broth and a special sauce, and dombe naengsuyuk (cold boiled pork slices) piled high with Jeju pork — three dishes in total.

Not long after ordering, the table was quickly set with neat, appetizing-looking dishes.

Dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced pork on a board)
The first thing my chopsticks reached for was the filling dombe naengsuyuk, made with generous portions of Jeju pork. It had a refreshing texture alongside tender softness, and it was perfect rolled up together with the bibim noodles.

It was delicious eaten with wasabi and salted seafood, and the texture was nicely tender.

Lean pork rice soup
The lean pork rice soup came with a richly simmered bone broth generously loaded with lean Jeju pork — every spoonful made me go 'wow.' Taking a big bite of the clean, tender lean pork and the deep broth, without a trace of gaminess, made all my travel fatigue disappear. It made total sense why Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is just as famous for its hearty rice soup as it is for Aewol pork noodle soup ><

Dongchimi bibim noodles (noodles in radish water kimchi)
Next, I tried the dongchimi bibim noodles, where the cool dongchimi broth and special sauce came together beautifully. It was spicy-sweet with that distinctive cool, clean, savory tang of dongchimi wrapping around my mouth — addictive, in a way that kept me reaching for more. Paired with the third dish, dombe naengsuyuk, it was a perfect match.

The dombe naengsuyuk, generously made with Jeju pork, had that refreshing texture and tender softness that was perfect rolled up together with the bibim noodles.

Side dishes from the self-serve bar
At Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, side dishes were easy to grab yourself from the self-serve bar.

Switching between the different dishes and savoring every bite, with the sound of waves crashing outside the window as my soundtrack — it doesn't get much better than that. Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch will absolutely be a choice you won't regret. Next time I'm back in western Jeju, I'd love to return without hesitation and enjoy that delicious Aewol pork noodle soup and rice soup all over again!
