One of the dishes I really wanted to try while wandering around Haenggung-dong in Suwon — besides pizza — was whole roast chicken 🍗 Suwon is famous for its chicken street, after all! This time, instead of the usual fried chicken, I went looking for a different kind of old-school Suwon chicken restaurant and ended up at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, near Hwaseong Haenggung.
It's a place where you can try whole chicken slow-roasted over oak firewood, which made it perfect for a Haenggung-dong dinner date 🔥

Finding an oak-fired chicken restaurant near Hwaseong Haenggung
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is close to Hwaseong Haenggung, so it's an easy stop while exploring Haenggung-dong.

Walking along, you can spot the big "Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak" sign !! These days Haenggung-dong is full of cafés and Western restaurants, but if you've come all the way to Suwon, I wanted to check out a Suwon chicken street restaurant at least once haha

What really sets this place apart is that it's not oil-fried chicken but whole chicken roasted over oak firewood, giving it a totally different appeal from regular chicken. Just seeing the stacked firewood already feels like a proper wood-fire specialty spot 🔥 Even from outside, you could catch a faint smoky wood scent, which had me looking forward to the food before it even arrived.
Inside Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak: what the space is like

The interior was cleaner than expected, with plenty of table space — good for visiting with friends or a date to enjoy chimaek (chicken and beer) 🍺 There were a lot of foreign customers, and it's a bit of a waiting-line spot too. On nice days, the open, airy feel seems great for an outdoor-drinking-style atmosphere, so it could work well for anyone looking for a bar in Haenggung-dong. A course like Hwaseong Haenggung sightseeing → a stroll along Haengridan-gil → oak-fired chicken with a beer sounds pretty great 💕
Menu and prices at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak

The signature dish is the Hanbang Jangjak-gui Tongdak (herbal oak-fired whole chicken) at ₩23,000, and beyond that there's Suwon wang-galbi (soy-marinated rib) style, smoked BBQ, traditional seasoned, fire-hot buldak, and corn cheese gratin-style oak-fired chicken. Sides include perilla oil buckwheat noodles (memil-makguksu) and cabbage salad, which paired nicely with the chicken. I liked that with such a varied menu, you can choose anything from plain oak-fired chicken to sauced versions depending on your taste.
Smoked BBQ sauce oak-fired chicken with added sausage

Finally, the oak-fired chicken arrived 🍗🔥 I got the smoked BBQ sauce oak-fired chicken with added sausage haha. Just visually, it was roasted to a gorgeous golden brown and looked so appetizing.
Maybe because it was slow-roasted over firewood, the skin was crispy and savory while the meat inside stayed moist and tender. Rather than the greasy feel of regular fried chicken, it was light and clean, the kind of taste that keeps you reaching for more!
Add in the subtle smoky aroma unique to oak firewood, and it was clearly different from chicken I usually eat. So if you're looking for an old-school Suwon chicken restaurant and prefer grilled over fried, this one would suit you especially well.
The crispy rice hidden under the chicken

And personally, the fun part was underneath the chicken! There's rice placed under the oak-fired chicken, and the part that gets crisped on the hot plate can be enjoyed almost like nurungji (crispy scorched rice). Recent visit reviews have also highlighted this rice and its nurungji-like texture as a defining feature.

A bite of juicy chicken followed by a bite of the savory scorched rice made for a surprisingly filling meal — plenty for dinner 😋 Eating it alongside kimchi and other side dishes went really well with the herbal-roasted chicken too.
Draft beer with oak-fired chicken

Crispy oak-fired chicken paired with a cold draft beer — the combo was amazing…🍻 Maybe because I'd walked a lot around Haenggung-dong that day, it tasted even better haha. If you're looking for good chicken in Suwon and also want somewhere for a light drink in the evening, this place is worth a visit.
Is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak worth a visit?

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak let me enjoy oak-fired chicken, so different from the usual fried version, right near Hwaseong Haenggung. The crispy roasted skin, juicy meat, and subtle woodsmoke aroma all came together for a satisfying meal 🍗
I especially liked that there's rice underneath the chicken, making it more filling than expected, and it also worked well as a spot for a beer after strolling Haenggung-dong. If you're traveling in Suwon and looking for an old-school Suwon chicken restaurant, a Suwon Chicken Street spot, or good chicken in Haenggung-dong, this is worth considering :) Since it's close to Hwaseong Haenggung, it also makes a great pairing for a Hwaseong Haenggung food + Haenggung-dong date course 🤍
