Tonkatsu taste test in Godeok, Pyeongtaek: Omi Katsu's three cutlets

In short

Omi Katsu is a handmade tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) restaurant that opened August 1 on Godeogyeoyeom 11-gil in Godeok, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. Tenderloin katsu, pork loin katsu and cheese katsu were tasted side by side at Omi Katsu, with mince curry rice and fried tofu udon on the side — the tenderloin katsu with salt and wasabi was the cleanest, while the cheese katsu poured out far more cheese than meat. A new Godeok spot worth remembering when you want to pick and choose between cutlet types.

Omi Katsu - a Godeok, Pyeongtaek tonkatsu restaurant -

I'm a food travel blogger, Jjunihwanibyeol. I went back to Godeok after a while and found a delicious new tonkatsu place! If you're ever heading to Godeok, make sure to save and share this post~

Inside Omi Katsu: a dining room as relaxed as a holiday

Omi Katsu is a handmade tonkatsu specialty restaurant located at 28 Godeogyeoyeom 11-gil, 101, in Godeok, Pyeongtaek. 🐷 A cute pig stamped as their certification mark greets you at the entrance!

Since handmade tonkatsu is their specialty, the glass-window interior shows the actual work happening inside haha. Already made me hungry, you know?

🌴 The atmosphere felt cool and comfortable, like being on a resort vacation, and there were plenty of tables.

Spacious tables with a resort-like feel

The chairs were different from a typical restaurant — comfortable and kind of unique. Felt like I could doze off in them~!?

How do you order at Omi Katsu? A kiosk at your table

Omi Katsu has a kiosk at every table, so you can order right where you're seated.

What to order at Omi Katsu

  • Udon set (tenderloin + cheese katsu, pork loin katsu)
  • Mince curry rice set (pork loin + cheese katsu)

Tenderloin katsu: the tenderest, mildest and most popular pick

If you're wondering about Omi Katsu's most popular menu item, I can confidently recommend it. The tenderloin katsu is the softest, most delicate tonkatsu I've ever had.

On the day I visited, every customer seemed to be ordering the tenderloin katsu, and seeing the sold-out sign confirmed it~

Cross-section of tenderloin katsu with salt and wasabi

Dipping it lightly in salt and topping with wasabi made for the cleanest and most distinctive tonkatsu combination I've tasted so far. 👏

Pork loin katsu: the classic cut that suits tonkatsu sauce best

If the tenderloin is the soft version, the pork loin katsu is the honest, classic tonkatsu — less softness, more of that clean, savory flavor — for anyone wanting the textbook version.

This is exactly the sample of traditional tonkatsu we usually picture, and it pairs best with tonkatsu sauce. Simple is best — seems simple, but you know the basics are always the hardest to get right? The soft texture as its foundation makes it easy to enjoy.

Cheese katsu: more cheese than pork

If you like cheese, you have to order this. Even if you don't like cheese, try the cheese katsu anyway. Once you taste it here at Omi Katsu, you'll fall for the cheese flavor in no time. 🧀

I properly tasted a cheese waterfall here that I never even felt eating pizza. That rich, nutty cheese flavor filling your mouth and softly oozing out... it was really special 🌈

🇺🇸 Why does the cheese imported from the US taste this deep and rich? As you can see, it's because the ratio of cheese to meat is abnormally overwhelming~

The light, savory cabbage salad comes with a black sesame and perilla seed sauce that isn't too heavy, so it's a healthy option to enjoy alongside.

Mince curry rice: a spicy curry made for pork loin katsu

🍛 This is a curry you'll fall for after just one bite. Plus, it goes really well with tonkatsu. The delicate pork loin katsu in particular paired great with it. The slightly peppery, spicy kick perfectly covers the one downside of tonkatsu — getting tiresome or greasy!

Fried tofu udon: when tonkatsu needs a bowl of broth

The udon noodles were nice and chewy, going down smoothly. If you like udon, try it alongside your tonkatsu~ If you're the type who always needs soup with rice, this is a menu item you'll enjoy having soup with your tonkatsu too.

Self-serve refills and the receipt review event at Omi Katsu

A tidy self-serve corner — it gives the impression of being maintained regularly, well organized and easy to grab side dishes from.

Kimchi, pickled radish, and pickled peppers are the basic side dishes, and you can even refill the warm udon broth base and rice~ 👍

Branded logo apron — the disposable apron provided as standard has the Coca-Cola logo on it... pretty fancy haha

Who Omi Katsu suits, and tips for your visit

I'm quite the tonkatsu fan, and this place is truly the real deal! 🙌 They source freshly slaughtered pork that day from pigs sourced all over the country, and make each tonkatsu with care. Plus, the cheese katsu uses specially selected, top-grade cheese~ 💯

A great specialty restaurant to visit when you're craving delicious tonkatsu

Finishing up the Omi Katsu tonkatsu meal
An empty plate, completely cleaned of tonkatsu

I usually can't finish a meal once I'm full, but it was too tasty to leave any behind.... I cleaned my plate completely, not sure if the owner will be satisfied haha
