My husband had been singing the same tune for weeks about wanting seasoned cockles, so I searched for cockle restaurants around Anseong and Pyeongtaek, and everyone recommended Kkomak Manse, a Boseong cockle specialist.

A large dining room split into private table areas

We went around 5:30pm on a weekday and it was already pretty busy, so I didn't get many interior shots. The hall is split into two sides with tables set up privately like this, which I really liked. There are also burners at the tables, so you can simmer things while you eat.

Order the 2-person family set and you get seasoned cockles, cockle pancake and cockle bibimbap all at once. The cockle bibimbap comes in soy sauce or spicy versions, which is great if you're eating with kids. And rice is free at the self-bar!!!

It's the only place in Pyeongtaek specializing in fresh live cockles, it has its own signature Manse seasoned cockles, and it even serves real dongdongju (unfiltered rice wine) made in Idong, Pocheon. A full Beolgyo cockle spread on one table with the family set

As soon as we sat down, basic side dishes came out along with tofu kimchi, laver and perilla leaves. They also gave us a hot odeng (fish cake) soup — it had a surprisingly spicy kick, probably from cheongyang chili. Then the family set arrived and the table was completely full.

For two people, order the family set

If you're going to Kkomak Manse as a pair, definitely get the family set. You get to try seasoned cockles, cockle bibimbap and cockle pancake all at once. It looks amazing too.

We chose the soy sauce cockle bibimbap

We ordered the soy sauce version of the cockle bibimbap. Bean sprouts, perilla leaves, flying fish roe and seaweed flakes mixed in with the cockles — it was tasty mixed together as is, and also delicious wrapped in laver or perilla leaves.

Seasoned cockles in soy sauce — already shelled and ready to eat

The seasoned cockles were so well cleaned that all you had to do was pop the meat right out in one go. That ease of eating is one of the unique strengths of this Pyeongtaek favorite. On top of that, the signature sauce ties everything together — great on its own, and an absolute rice thief over a bowl of plain white rice.

Eating the flying fish roe together with the cockles was also a treat — usually other places give you just a little and charge extra for more, but here they gave us so much we actually had leftovers. Perilla leaf or laver, topped with cockles and flying fish roe, wrapped into one bite. Or laver with rice, piled high with flying fish roe and cockles, wrapped into one bite.

The cockle pancake comes as three pieces

If it had been fried as one big piece, it wouldn't have this crispy texture. Fried as three separate pieces instead, it stays crunchy. It's packed with plump cockles too, so the texture is great. Top it with a bit of onion for a tangy, salty bite that's so good.

A Pyeongtaek cockle restaurant that also works for older parents

My husband, who'd been singing about cockles for weeks, loosened his belt and overate that day. After happily polishing off the whole spread and patting his stomach, he said if this place were near our house he'd come every day.
