Late-night oden bar in Gangnam: six skewers and sake at Shunno Oden

In short

Shunno Oden Nonhyeon is a second-generation handmade oden izakaya in an alley one minute from Exit 3 of Nonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On a breezy autumn Sunday night, an outdoor table at Shunno Oden Nonhyeon brought six oden ordered one by one — egg, mochi rice cake, curly fish cake, vegetable fish cake, pollock roe and suji (beef tendon) — with a house sake (300ml tokkuri) for 10,000 won and barley miso with cucumber. À la carte prices are low enough that everyone can pick their own oden, which makes Shunno Oden Nonhyeon an easy second-round bar.

What is the seating like inside Shunno Oden Nonhyeon?

The inside of Shunno Oden Nonhyeon had that calm, cozy vibe of an actual Japanese izakaya. There were counter seats right in front of the kitchen,

and further in, tables good for groups plus bar seating along the wall — good for solo drinking, dates, or a work dinner/group gathering. A really versatile outdoor-seating izakaya near Nonhyeon Station.

Patio season is finally back! We both run hot so we usually sit inside, but that night there was a genuinely cool autumn breeze, so we grabbed a spot at one of Shunno Oden Nonhyeon's outdoor tables.

The alley the restaurant sits on doesn't get much car traffic or foot traffic either, so it wasn't noisy at all — a bonus.

On the table were chopsticks, spicy chili flakes, soy sauce, and napkins.

House sake (300ml tokkuri), 10,000 won — choose your own cup

At this outdoor-seating izakaya near Nonhyeon Station, you get to choose your own cup from a variety of designs.

House sake (300ml tokkuri), ₩10,000. Maybe our tastes are converging, but we both picked the cute polar bear cup. Shunno Oden Nonhyeon doesn't carry soju, so we went with fragrant sake instead.

We ordered six oden skewers plus one side dish. Since the prices are so low, we could just order everything we each wanted, haha.

Six oden ordered à la carte: taste and prices

Four types of oden moriawase sitting in dashi broth

Four of the oden skewers came plated together, while the pollock roe and suji were served separately.

Warm, clean-tasting dashi broth

Egg 2,000 won and mochi rice cake 2,500 won

The mochi rice cake had a wonderfully chewy texture, and we dipped it in chili flakes plus soy sauce. (Brought back memories of the mochi I had in Busan~)

Curly fish cake, 3,000 won

Thin, tender fish cake skewered in curly loops, soaked through with dashi — the umami really came through.

Vegetable fish cake, 3,000 won

The soft-textured vegetable fish cake, paired with the other oden's varied flavors and textures, made the drinks go down even better.

Pollock roe, 4,500 won

The salty, umami pollock roe was better paired with the mild egg or fish cake than eaten alone — it rounded out the seasoning perfectly.

Suji (beef tendon), 6,000 won

I love suji so much, but my friend isn't into it, so we usually end up picking only what we both like. At Shunno Oden Nonhyeon, since prices are so reasonable, I could just order suji for myself, haha.

Suji served separately with broth

Melty, tender, chewy — this suji had it all. Scooped up with the broth, it even tasted like a bowl of sujitang (beef tendon soup).

Barley miso with cucumber, 7,000 won

Barley miso and cucumber, ₩7,000

Cool, crisp cucumber dipped into the salty, nutty barley miso — yum. The savory miso paired with sweet cucumber made a great snack to pick at between drinks.

If you're after handmade oden and a drink on a cool autumn night patio table, give Shunno Oden Nonhyeon a try!
