In short

Buja Hodu is a dessert shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, that bakes hodu-gwaja (walnut-shaped pastries) with 100% rice dough. The writer bought three flavors — low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, and the almond praline limited to 50 a day — and ate them at the terrace out front, then found the bojagi-wrapped Chuseok gift set on sale both in store and on Naver Smart Store. At Buja Hodu, instant packaging is the answer for souvenirs and boxed packaging for gifts.

Instant pack or gift box: which one to choose at Buja Hodu?

Buja Hodu instant packaging and boxed packaging options

Buja Hodu offers both instant packaging and boxed packaging. Want to eat them right away simply? = instant packaging. For gifting = boxed packaging.

The instant packaging is a bit cheaper, so if it's just for a souvenir and not for gifting, instant packaging is the better deal! I'd recommend spending the boxed-packaging surcharge on more walnut pastries instead.

When you order the Chuseok gift set, the bojagi wrapping has this soft gradient look that makes it prettier and more upscale, don't you think? 💜

How the three 100% rice-dough walnut pastries tasted

Purchased low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, and almond praline walnut pastries

I bought low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, and almond praline. The almond praline is sold only 50 a day, and I happened to visit early so I got lucky enough to buy it. This was pure luck ~ 🍀

You can see from the cross-section that it's packed full of walnuts and paste. There's really so much walnut inside — on a completely different level from the walnut pastries you'd get at a highway rest stop. And maybe because it's 100% rice dough, it tastes cleaner and nuttier. Especially the low-sugar red bean — it has a much healthier flavor than the walnut pastries I usually eat, and even my parents were satisfied with it.

Final verdict on Buja Hodu in Gyeongju
