Hongdae chicken feet restaurant with corn cheese: Cheongnyeon 1987
In short
Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch is a chicken feet restaurant with an open-air pojangmacha (street tent bar) feel, sitting right on the border of Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong in Seoul. On an early weekday evening, two of us ordered the Cheongnyeon Dakbal Set (tulip soup chicken feet plus added daechang and cheese) with a side of corn cheese, and the set's rice balls, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), fried chicken skin and mukbap (acorn jelly in cold broth) filled us up with no extra rice needed. The spicy soup chicken feet with hot-plate corn cheese is the balance point at Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987.

With the weather cooling down lately, I went to Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch! It's right on the border between Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong, so the location is great, and the open-air tent vibe makes for such good atmosphere. Perfect spot for spicy chicken feet and a drink><
How to get to Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch

Come out of Exit 2 at Hongik Univ. Station and it's a 5-minute walk! A short stroll and you're there. The access from the station is so good it's perfect as a meeting spot for Hongdae bars or Yeonnam-dong bars.
What the open-tent interior feels like

The moment you walk into Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch, you get that wide-open, pojangmacha (street tent bar) feeling right away~~

With the breeze picking up lately, this is exactly the kind of weather where an outdoor drinking session is great, and the seats with the windows all thrown open were really nice.

The retro-yet-hip lighting and music made for such a lively, upbeat atmosphere that the drinks just went down easy (it's Hongdae after all, so lots of young people around haha).

Even though we went on an early weekday evening, the indoor pojangmacha-style seats full of character were already packed with customers~~

There were disposable gloves and tissues placed around, and the whole place had that college-neighborhood vibe going for it!
People sitting by the walls also seem to have fun doodling on them haha.
Ordering the Cheongnyeon Dakbal Set with a corn cheese side

Ordering is easy through the kiosk~ We were so hungry we went all out and ordered the signature Cheongnyeon Dakbal Set plus corn cheese~!

The Cheongnyeon Dakbal Set (tulip soup chicken feet + added daechang + added cheese) came in a huge portion, perfect as a drinking snack!
Tulip soup chicken feet with added daechang and cheese

The chicken feet come sitting in a shallow, savory broth, topped with plump daechang (beef small intestine) and a generous heap of cheese!
Since it's tulip-style chicken feet, only the toe meat slides right out, so they're super easy to pick apart and eat!

The chewy texture of the chicken feet soaked in the spicy sauce is great, and as you chew, the savory burst of daechang and the stretchy cheese kick in~~ it mellows out the spiciness and tastes so good.

Rice balls, kalguksu, fried chicken skin and mukbap in the set
The rest of the menu pairs so well together too — the set even includes rice balls and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), so it's perfect even if you skip rice beforehand!

The kalguksu that came with it also had noodles that stayed chewy without getting soggy, and a spicy, hearty broth was great! Perfect to slurp down before the chicken feet gets fully simmering~~

Chicken skin fritters and mukbap (acorn jelly soup) too... such a delicious combo as drinking snacks that you can keep munching through it neatly. The mukbap in particular, with kimchi, seaweed, and cucumber in a tangy-sweet, cool broth, cut through the greasiness and spice so well that my hand kept reaching for it!

For me, the perfectly crispy chicken skin fritters were so good!
Why corn cheese is a must with soup chicken feet

The corn cheese side is a must when eating the spicy soup chicken feet! The corn cheese also comes sizzling on a hot plate~~ The corn kernels are crunchy and sweet-savory, packed with cheese, so a bite of chicken feet followed by a spoonful of corn cheese is the perfect balance><
Is Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch worth it?
- Tulip soup chicken feet set & corn cheese recommended — the tulip chicken feet are easy to pick apart, and the savory daechang plus cheese combo is great! The portion is huge and adding the savory corn cheese makes it even better.
- Open-tent atmosphere perfect for this weather — the wide-open pojangmacha mood makes for a great weekday evening with spicy chicken feet and a good drink!
The generous tulip soup chicken feet with daechang and corn cheese combo is the best><. If you're near Hongdae or Yeonnam-dong looking for a Hongdae chicken feet restaurant or a hip Yeonnam-dong bar to enjoy that open-tent feeling in this cool breeze, I strongly recommend Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987~~ The portions are so generous and the combo so good that the two of us walked out completely stuffed! The spicy-sweet-savory broth with daechang combo is always a happiness🤍
