Hongdae chicken feet bar with sugar tomato: Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987
In short
Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch is a chicken feet (dakbal) bar on Donggyo-ro near Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. Two servings of boneless soup chicken feet came to 12,000 won and were ordered at spice level 2 of 3, the buldak-level heat, alongside a tuna mayo rice ball, sugar tomato, top-grade hanwoo beef tartare and draft beer. Fried chicken skin comes with the order, and dipping the rice ball in the broth and topping it with chicken feet was the best bite of the night.

Today I'm writing up my visit to Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987, a chicken feet spot in Hongdae.

Where is Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch, and is there parking?
Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch is at 152-18 Donggyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Parking isn't available, but you can call the store directly for reservations or questions.

Inside the bar and the terrace seats
The interior of this Hongdae chicken feet spot is made up of tables for 2 to 4 people. The walls were covered in graffiti left by past customers, which gave off a cozy, old-school regulars' hangout feel.

There were also seats set up on the terrace, which looked great for outdoor dining when the weather's nice.

What we ordered at Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 and what it cost
We ordered two servings of boneless soup chicken feet for ₩12,000, top-grade hanwoo beef tartare for ₩19,000, tuna mayo rice balls for ₩5,500, sugar tomato for ₩8,000, and draft beer for ₩5,000~
There was also a review event going on — you get fries for free if you write a review, just so you know~

We got bean sprout soup and pickled radish as complimentary side dishes.

They say chicken feet go with soju, but that day I was really craving draft beer 😋 It was cold and delicious.

Sugar tomato, with plenty of sugar on top
The first thing to arrive at Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch was the sugar tomato (₩8,000). I mean, you're not eating sugar tomato to be healthy anyway 🤭 So I asked the staff to sprinkle on extra sugar.

Since the tomato was sliced thin, even the skin felt really tender. Sweet and tangy — perfect drinking food.

How hot is spice level 2 boneless soup chicken feet?
Next up came the two servings of boneless soup chicken feet (₩12,000)~ At first glance there was barely any broth, so I wondered if they'd accidentally given us the dry grilled version instead — but as it simmered, more and more broth showed up 😊

Interestingly, they served chicken skin fritters alongside it?! I tried one before the sauce soaked in, and it was crispy and savory — really good.

The chicken feet come with 3 adjustable spice levels, and I went with level 2. It said 'buldak spicy level' on the menu, and it really was on par with actual buldak spice! Keep eating and at some point you start sucking in air from the heat, but the sauce is so good that your hand keeps reaching for more anyway.

Tuna mayo rice ball dipped in the chicken feet broth
Right as the spice was making me desperate for rice, the tuna mayo rice ball (₩5,500) arrived! The portion was pretty generous — felt like it was made with two bowls' worth of rice.

Dip it lightly in the broth, then top it with chicken feet — it's insanely good, you have to eat it this way.

Top-grade hanwoo beef tartare served with somyeon noodles
Last up was the top-grade hanwoo beef tartare (₩19,000)~ Interestingly, it came with somyeon noodles on the side!

Unlike other places, the beef tartare was sliced really thin, which meant the seasoning soaked in more, and it blended nicely into the noodles without ever feeling separate. Since there's plenty else to eat besides the chicken feet, this place would work fine even with a friend who can't handle chicken feet 🤗

If you're looking for a chicken feet restaurant in Hongdae, I'd recommend Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987 Hongdae Branch.
