Dog-friendly Aewol black pork restaurant with free jjigae: Nopo Dwaeji
In short
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a Jeju black pork (heukdwaeji) geun-gogi restaurant on the main road near Gwakji Beach in Aewol, Jeju. The writer sat indoors with her dog and ordered black pork geun-gogi, 24-hour aged kimchi jjigae and kelp rice, and staff grilled the pork at the table so it cooked very quickly. A Naver review event made the kimchi jjigae free and the self-serve bar refilled the side dishes, so Nopo Dwaeji Aewol felt like good value.

Where is Nopo Dwaeji Aewol, and how do parking and reservations work?
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol sits right on the main road near Gwakji Beach, and there's a large dedicated lot behind the building — a real relief since parking near Gwakji Beach itself is notoriously tough. The building looks freshly built, with a big clean sign that always caught my eye whenever I drove past.

I'd read that the wait here can be pretty long, so I booked ahead through Naver before visiting.
Indoor seating with a dog at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol

The place wasn't fully packed, but for a weekday past peak season, there were still quite a few people — made me glad I'd reserved ahead.

Maybe because the building is so new, even as a BBQ place it felt clean and pleasant, and the tables were spaced generously enough that we could chat freely without worrying about the tables in front, beside, or behind us.

You can't help but feel a little self-conscious sometimes... but Nopo Dwaeji Aewol allows dogs indoors, so our dog Ttolbong joined us too.
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol menu and lunch special

The star of the menu at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is, of course, the black pork geun-gogi (thick-cut grilled pork). Beyond that, you can also choose other cuts like galmaegisal (skirt meat) and hangjeongsal (pork jowl) depending on your taste.
The lunch special set — meat, jjigae, and rice all together — looked especially good value. Geun-gogi can feel like a lot for lunch, so this is a great option when you want meat but not a whole heavy meal.

Side dishes and free refills at the self-serve bar
Dongchimi (watery radish kimchi), young cabbage salad, pickled peppers, mu-saengchae (seasoned radish salad), and ssammu (thin pickled radish for wraps) — the various side dishes to go with the meat were

all refillable at the self-serve bar. One note though — wasabi sauce for the meat needs to be requested separately, so keep that in mind!

Of all the sides, mu-saengchae and pickled peppers went best with the meat, I think. Oh! And the dongchimi was the perfect palate cleanser (digestif?) at the end.
Black pork geun-gogi grilled at the table by staff

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol offers a grilling service, so you don't need to worry about tending the meat at all, start to finish.

Whether it's the strong charcoal fire or just the staff's skill, the meat cooked really fast — great if you show up hungry.

Another plus: sometimes it's hard to chat comfortably while staff are grilling right there, but here they grill quickly and then step away, so we could talk freely while eating.

Black pork grilled by an expert hand? Need I say more — it was so good. Every bite of meat was infused with charcoal aroma, almost like a smoked sausage, with a hint of sweetness.

Melt jeot and radish salad with black pork
Dip it in the funky melljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) and the umami explodes. Fair warning: melljeot is on the salty side, so if you dunk it as generously as I did, you might crave a lot of water that night.

Piling on mu-saengchae is my favorite combo. I refilled it twice, that's how much I liked it.

Oh, and the initial side dish setup doesn't include wrap greens — but head to the self-serve bar and you'll find lettuce, perilla leaves, peppers, and garlic ready to go, so fellow wrap-lovers like me, don't forget to grab some!

24-hour aged kimchi jjigae, kelp rice, and the free review event
To finish the meal, we ordered the 24-hour aged kimchi jjigae along with the signature kelp rice.

If you participate in the Naver review event, you get a kimchi jjigae loaded with meat, kimchi, and tofu for free. It's already a delicious sweet-and-spicy jjigae, but getting it for free somehow made it taste even better. It cut right through any greasiness from the pork fat and left my stomach feeling clean.

We cleaned out the meat, the jjigae, and the kelp rice completely. Charcoal-scented, crisp-outside-tender-inside black pork, a grilling service, and a free jjigae/naengmyeon perk — this black pork spot near Gwakji Beach, Nopo Dwaeji Aewol, checks every box. Don't hesitate, give it a try!
