In short
Suragan Tteokbang is an omegi-tteok (millet rice cake) shop on Noyeon-ro in Jeju City, Jeju. A box of 20 pieces was reserved by phone and picked up on the last day of a trip, frozen right away, then moved to the fridge an hour before eating to enjoy it cold. Chewy glutinous rice and unsweetened whole red bean filling made it a satisfying gift to bring home.

Jeju's best omegi-tteok (millet rice cake) shop, Suragan Tteokbang | picked some up as a Jeju travel gift 🍊
Why I chose omegi-tteok as a Jeju travel gift
Coming back from a Jeju trip, I was trying to figure out what souvenir to bring family and friends, and this time I picked up omegi-tteok, Jeju's signature snack. The place I visited was Suragan Tteokbang! It's close to Jeju Airport too, so it was easy to stop by for pickup on the last day of the trip before heading to the airport.

This place is known for its rice cake packaging! And in particular, its omegi-tteok — the snack that comes to mind when you think of Jeju — is delicious.

They wrap it really prettily, and they also run delivery for chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cake) and omegi-tteok! If you're far away and can't visit but still want to eat it, ordering delivery seems like a great option.

Going near closing time? Phone reservations recommended
When I went near closing time, almost all the rice cakes were sold out, haha ㅠ Still, I was fine since I'd already reserved my omegi-tteok for pickup! If you're planning to pick some up, I recommend calling ahead the day before or a few days in advance to reserve.

Gift wrapping paper and bojagi
And the gift wrapping paper here was so pretty. They have several kinds of boxes and bojagi (wrapping cloths), all of them classy-looking, and I'd recommend picking one up for holidays like Seollal or Chuseok.

Review: one box of 20 omegi-tteok
I ordered a box of 20 omegi-tteok! Isn't the packaging so clean!? Haha. 20 pieces for just around ₩22,000 ❗️❗️ The nice thing is you get to try a variety of flavors.

How to store omegi-tteok
Inside, there are storage instructions for the omegi-tteok — basically, you need to put it straight into the freezer the moment you get it. I'd recommend buying it on the last day of your Jeju trip or the day you're heading straight home!

How to thaw it
They say it's best if left to thaw naturally for about 2 hours. I moved mine from the freezer to the fridge a bit before eating, and it thawed quickly and was perfectly cold and refreshing to eat. Try taking it out an hour before eating! Inside there's also a variety of omegi-tteok flavors along with an ice pack — the colors are so pretty and varied, making it perfect as a gift package.

How did it taste?
The warm, soft glutinous rice, the unsweetened whole red bean, and the nuts on the outside all came together in genuinely harmonious flavor.
Chewy rice cake combined with sweet red bean paste and nutty red bean powder — plain yet subtly sweet, exactly the taste you'd expect from Jeju's signature snack.

The chewy rice cake was packed with sweet red bean paste inside, so with the first bite the nutty, sweet flavor spread out and it was so delicious, and the nutty red bean powder on the outside paired well with the chewy texture, giving it that plain, distinctive taste of a traditional Jeju rice cake!
Rather than too sweet, it's subtly sweet and plain, the kind of taste you keep reaching for! The rice cake itself is sticky and chewy, so the nutty flavor comes alive the more you chew. It's tasty straight out of the fridge, but if you leave it out at room temperature a bit, the rice cake softens and you get an even chewier texture! Personally, I liked it better cold.

The packaging is so pretty, and it's great that you can try several flavors at once. Such delicious omegi-tteok! If you want to try it, I recommend Suragan Tteokbang in Jeju.
