Today I visited Gasyukgo Hakdong, a Yeosu pork belly restaurant where you can enjoy Yeosu's famous Dolsan mustard leaf kimchi alongside top-grade aged pork. A place with the generous spread typical of the southern coast plus the comfort of having your meat grilled for you❗❗ Here's my review!

Where is Gasyukgo Hakdong and what are its hours?

Gasyukgo Hakdong is located at 59 Seonso-ro, 1st floor, in Hakdong, near Yeosu City Hall. It's open daily from 17:00 to 23:00, with last order at 22:30.

It sits right on the Hakdong Busam restaurant street near Yeosu City Hall, so it's super accessible. There's a public parking lot nearby too, so parking is convenient~

What is the dining room like inside?

I went right when it opened, worried there'd be a wait❗ The moment I stepped through the door, the wood-toned interior gave off a modern yet warm coziness that I loved instantly. Even though it's a BBQ place, the whole space was so clean and comfortable, with no smoke or smell — it put me in a good mood the second I walked in.

The tables had plenty of space between them, and there were soft sofa seats plus comfortable chairs with room to tuck away your coat — a great space to chat comfortably with people you care about over a meal.

Ordering for three: the 700g Gat-yukgo full platter

There were three of us this time, so we ordered the restaurant's signature Gat-yukgo full platter set.

The basic side dishes — Yeosu's specialty Dolsan mustard leaf kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, pickled chili, wasabi, and salt — are all set on the grill along with the meat. Grilling the kimchi and bean sprouts on the pan together with the meat is such a kick

Out came thick, vivid red-pink aged pork belly, hanger steak, and pork neck. With a solid 700g, the three of us could enjoy a really generous meal with plenty to spare.

How the staff grill each cut to the right doneness

At Gasyukgo Hakdong, a staff member carefully grills the meat for you from start to finish. All you have to do is comfortably eat the juicy meat, grilled golden brown and crisp outside, tender inside — genuinely satisfying.

They served the hanger steak (yukhyangsal) first, saying it tastes best at 70% doneness, and to let them know if it needed more cooking. What they grilled was delicious as-is, so I ate it just like that, haha

The pork neck was grilled to 80% doneness. That seems to be the sweet spot for the best flavor.

What hanger steak (yukhyangsal) tastes like

The hanger steak reminded me a bit of skirt steak, a bit of beef hanger steak — low in fat but with a deep meaty aroma that spreads through your mouth, and the more you chew, the more tender and chewy it gets. Really tasty, haha

Pork belly with grilled Dolsan mustard leaf kimchi

Topping a golden-grilled piece of pork belly with tangy, well-fermented mustard leaf kimchi cuts right through the richness of the meat and creates a perfect balance. Grilled mushrooms, gochu peppers, and grilled pineapple added to the fun of the meal.
