Gyeongju Bomun café to rest mid-trip with a kid: Bibibidang

A record of eating pumpkin bingsu and dawan coffee at Bibibidang, on the 1st floor of Uyang Museum in Gyeongju! Overall, what I liked most was the space itself — quietly resting while looking at the paintings on the walls — and drinking coffee straight out of a bowl was such a unique experience! Why we stopped at Bibibidang mid-trip

Bibibidang Gyeongju is a café on the 1st floor of Uyang Museum in Gyeongju's Bomun district. When you're traveling around Gyeongju, days somehow fly by fast. That day too, we'd been out and about since the morning, and both my kid and I were getting tired and just wanted somewhere to sit down and rest.

I was thinking of quiet spots among the cafés near Gyeongju Bomun,

and Bibibidang, on the 1st floor of Uyang Museum near the Hilton, came to mind. Since it's a café inside a museum, I figured we could rest there calmly!

First impression of a café inside Uyang Museum

The first thing that caught my eye walking into Bibibidang Gyeongju was a big painting on the wall — a piece with a yellowish background and long vertical blue brushstrokes dripping down. Having a painting like that hanging on a café wall really made it feel like sitting inside an actual museum.

Below the painting, a gray cushioned bench ran along the wall, and the whole color palette stuck to white, gray, and beige tones, which was easy on the eyes.

While taking photos, I noticed the tables were spaced generously apart too, so we never ended up sitting right next to another table — it felt relaxed and really nice :)

Pumpkin bingsu at Bibibidang: even the bowl was beautiful

What we ordered was pumpkin bingsu (shaved ice) and dawan coffee.

The pumpkin bingsu came piled high in a bowl that looked as heavy as brassware, with two slices of jujube on top.

The deep orange color matched the bowl so well that I found myself taking photos before even eating!

The way the syrup trickled down over the finely shaved ice was pretty too, and the bowl wasn't small, so it was plenty for me and my kid to share :)

What drinking dawan coffee from a bowl is like

Bibibidang's dawan coffee was honestly the most unusual item on the menu.

The coffee came in a flat, white-porcelain-colored bowl with one big round chunk of ice floating right in the middle. My husband and I looked at each other the second it arrived and burst out laughing, like 'huh??' haha

Beside it, a small glass bottle of coffee came out separately. Drinking coffee straight from a bowl instead of a cup, for the first time, felt a bit awkward at first — but the awkwardness itself was part of the fun!

It was also fun watching how the inside of the bowl slowly changed as the big ice cube melted. Definitely a different experience from my usual iced coffee :)

The small desserts served alongside

Next to the bingsu and coffee were two more small plates. One had a flower shape made in purple and pale pink, and the other was a golden wave-patterned plate with a round bite-sized snack heavily coated in sesame seeds, tasting a bit like small yanggaeng (sweet bean jelly). Having even these tiny bites served on different dishware made us feel taken care of :)

Is Bibibidang Gyeongju worth a stop?

Thinking back on it, Bibibidang Gyeongju was a place I remember more for how we rested than for what we ate. Drinking coffee in an unusual way in a quiet space full of paintings, eating desserts served in pretty dishware — even in a short time, I felt like I'd properly rested in a really peaceful atmosphere.

If you're looking among cafés near Gyeongju Bomun for somewhere quiet to sit, this might be worth adding to your list. I'd like to come back before or after a museum visit and try other menu items too :)
