Alley parking, spice level 2 whole-squid jjamppong: Dong-gu, Ulsan
In short
Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant in Ilsanji, Dong-gu, Ulsan, serving jjamppong and jjajang on sizzling stone plates. Arriving 10 minutes after the 11am opening, the restaurant's own lot was already full, so parking happened in the alley, and by noon six parties were waiting. The order was a medium dol jjamppong with whole squid added for 5,000 won at spice level 2, plus a dontang-chitang set, and the scorched rice scraped from the bottom of the stone plate made it worth the wait.

Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong is in Ilsanji, Ulsan. It's a 6-minute walk from Ilsanji Beach, and Daewangam Park's tower parking lot is just a 2-minute drive away — a great Dong-gu restaurant to hit before or after visiting the beach or the park.

The store's own lot holds about 10 cars. There are a lot of spots to park in the surrounding alleys, and even though it was only 11:10, we ended up parking in the alley too — that's how much of a waiting-list restaurant this is!

Is Ulsan Daewangam Dol Jjamppong good with kids?
There's kids' tableware, a baby-food-only microwave, and a high chair, all available if needed. This Dong-gu, Ulsan restaurant even thinks of kids! There's also a kids' jjajangmyeon menu.

The basic side dishes are pickled radish and onion.

At the self-serve bar there's pickled radish, onion, and green onion kimchi. Rice is free — take as much as you like.
How to eat the dol jjamppong with whole squid
Everything came out at once. It's on a stone plate, so watch out for burns. The jjamppong broth keeps sizzling and bubbling on the hot stone. There's even an eating guide printed on the kiosk — worth checking!
Our dol jjamppong went like this:

1. Mix the bean sprouts and noodles together — even as a medium size split between two people, the portion was huge.
2. Cut it up with scissors for easier eating

They cut up the whole squid we added too.
3. Scoop out portions and dig in — I chose level 2, slightly spicy, and it was just the right amount of heat. (If you're spice-shy, level 1 is recommended!!!) Because it's on a stone plate, the jjamppong broth reduces down until it's almost like a stir-fried jjamppong. It's full of smoky wok-hei flavor, the seasoning soaks into the noodles, and the salty-spicy taste keeps you coming back for more. The noodles are chewy and stayed chewy without going soft the whole way through.
Inside there's plump shrimp, wood ear mushroom, bean sprouts, onion, cabbage, and squid. Even without adding the whole squid, squid is already included as standard!
4. Eat the scorched rice at the bottom — scrape off the crispy bits stuck to the stone plate. Having soaked up the jjamppong broth, they're deliciously chewy! The rice at the self-serve bar is free, so you can add more, but by the time you finish the noodles the broth is already gone 😂 If you plan to mix in rice, add it early!

What is the dontang-chitang set like?
The dontang-chitang, ordered as a side from the set menu, is fried pork and fried chicken.

The handmade dontang is fried pork, with a thick chunk of meat inside a crispy shell. It's somewhere between tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) and pork cutlet. It's also great dipped in the accompanying tonkatsu sauce with some onion.

The handmade chitang is fried chicken, using moist, tender meat rather than dry cuts. It tastes like karaage. It comes with a spicy-sweet sauce, so you can eat it like yangnyeom (seasoned) chicken too.
The dontang-chitang pairs really well with the green onion kimchi from the self-serve bar or with the dol jjamppong! Finished it off with a candy to cleanse the palate 👍

Daewangam Dol Jjamppong was a satisfying restaurant near Daewangam, Ulsan — highly recommend the stone-plate jjajang and stone-plate jjamppong, where you can even eat the scorched rice too!
