Jinju cold noodle spot a local visited five times: Songgiwon Jinju

In short

Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store is a Jinju naengmyeon (cold noodle) specialist on Cheonsu-ro in Juyak-dong, Jinju. A lifelong Jinju local toured the city's best-known naengmyeon houses this summer and came back to Songgiwon more than five times, ordering all three bowls on one table — Sunjo 1800 mul-naengmyeon at 13,000 won, Nongae 1593 bibim-naengmyeon at 13,000 won and Songgiwon 1997 mixed naengmyeon at 14,000 won — plus ujeon (pan-fried beef) at 25,000 won. Both kids and adults liked it, so Songgiwon is the one to pick if you only have time for a single naengmyeon meal in Jinju.

Having been born and raised in Jinju, and having lived most of my life here, I get asked a lot by out-of-town friends visiting Jinju for restaurant recommendations. Requests for Jinju naengmyeon (cold noodle) spots come up the most. No matter how good a restaurant is, eating there too often gets old, so it's been hard to keep recommending the same place year after year. Lately, though, my go-to Jinju naengmyeon spot has been Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon. Starting this past May I made the rounds of all the famous Jinju naengmyeon restaurants — the others were plenty good too (though I only went to them once or twice and didn't go back) — but I've visited Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon more than five times, which makes it my absolute favorite Jinju naengmyeon spot of summer 2026.

Mornings and evenings have a cool breeze now that says fall is here, but the daytime heat is still fierce, so I went one more time for what might be my last cool bowl of naengmyeon before the chilly wind really sets in.

Where is Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon, and is there parking?

The Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store is in Juyak-dong. The building exterior looks almost identical to the original Songgiwon location. Even the mural here isn't exactly the same as the one at the original, but the style and vibe are nearly identical — haha.

The parking lot is spacious enough, and there's a staff member managing parking who helps out whether you're pulling in or leaving. Since noodle restaurants tend to have quick table turnover, even when there was no parking spot open, one usually opened up after just a short wait.

Inside Songgiwon: waiting times and how easy it is with a baby

The restaurant itself isn't huge, but it has around 20 tables. It's spacious enough that even when there was a wait in summer, it moved quickly. (It's fall now so it's not as busy as summer, and they weren't running the Table Waiting app when I visited — but in summer, remote queueing through Table Waiting was available! I wonder if they'll turn it back on during the Yudeung Lantern Festival season when it gets crowded again.)

Overall the space has a calm wood-tone feel, with lighting and displayed objects that make it feel cozy. They usually give you a pretty ceramic cup, but since we had a baby at our table, they switched us to a paper cup instead. I really appreciated that kind of thoughtfulness — it's hard to let a baby drink freely when you're worried about a breakable cup.

Ujeon

It came out almost exactly 5 minutes after we ordered, right after we sat down! Hot and savory, the ujeon was so, so good. It's a pretty generous portion (labeled as serving 2–3 people) — I thought, wow, that's a lot! — but my daughter Choi Jo-i kept eating down to the very last piece and asked if there was more. We enjoyed it thoroughly. She devoured the ujeon endlessly on our previous visits too, saying it was so delicious — and here she was doing it again today.

Sunjo 1800 mul-naengmyeon: clean broth, toppings with no cucumber

Sunjo 1800 (mul-naengmyeon)

They say it's made from carefully roasted, high-quality Jeju buckwheat, self-milled in house, and you can really tell — the noodles are chewy and nutty. The toppings are Korean pear, radish kimchi, pork yukjeon (pan-fried beef/pork), and egg — no cucumber, so anyone in the anti-cucumber camp will love this. Both the toppings and the broth are very clean-tasting; it's not flashy or overwhelming, just a really refined, clean flavor — top notch!

Songgiwon 1997 mixed naengmyeon: halfway between mul and bibim

Songgiwon 1997 (mixed naengmyeon)

At other naengmyeon restaurants, the mixed version usually feels like bibim-naengmyeon with mul-naengmyeon broth poured in and stirred together. Songgiwon's version sits somewhere between the two, but it's not exactly in the middle either — it's got a flavor that's a little different from the straightforward red spice of the bibim version. (I used to assume it would just taste like a diluted version of the bibim-naengmyeon's red flavor, but this visit, ordering all three types together, let me actually compare them.) Either way, the mixed naengmyeon was refreshing and really delicious.

Nongae 1593 bibim-naengmyeon: spicy, with warm broth on the side

Nongae 1593 (bibim-naengmyeon)

The noodles themselves aren't spicy (and I'm a total wimp who even finds Shin Ramyeon too spicy), but the red sauce has a nice, satisfying kick. What's really unusual is the broth served alongside the bibim-naengmyeon (they give it to you in a cup!) — it has a hint of pepper flavor, and a spicy punch from what tastes like cheongyang chili (Korean green chili) right up front. Neither the noodles nor the broth taste especially spicy on their own, but when you take a sip of the warm broth right after eating the bibim-naengmyeon, the red sauce's spice combines with the pepper and chili heat of the broth and just — bam! — hits your mouth all at once. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes spicy food! (If you can't handle spice, just don't drink much of the broth — have water instead. ^^)

There's nothing here that isn't worth eating — whatever you order, you can't go wrong. It's just a matter of preference; there's no bad dish. I saw they've added galbitang (short rib soup) as a winter seasonal menu starting in September, so I'll have to try that on my next visit. ^^

Verdict: the one naengmyeon restaurant to choose in Jinju

This week is Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), and from October, Jinju will see huge crowds for the Yudeung Lantern Festival and the Korea Drama Festival. Most people visiting Jinju after a while will be searching for good places to eat, and if you can't hit every naengmyeon restaurant and have to pick just one, I recommend Songgiwon, a Jinju naengmyeon favorite!! A flavor that both kids and adults love. A place I'll keep going back to.
