Daegu Korean BBQ with tender frozen pork: Suyeong Naengsam

In short

Suyeong Naengsam Daegu Direct Store is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Jung-gu, Daegu, serving quick-frozen sliced pork and pork belly. My husband and I had three portions of sliced pork, two portions of pork belly, and bibim guksu for 45,000 won. Verdict: the thin, tender sliced pork makes this a satisfying value meal.

This is the famous quick-frozen sliced pork and pork belly from Seocho Galbi in Busan—the place where Psy supposedly ate 20 portions because it was so good.. I heard that, using pork supplied by Seocho Galbi, you can enjoy it in Daegu at a good price too, so my husband and I went to check it out.

What is the inside of the restaurant like?

Inside Suyeong Naengsam

The inside felt pleasant, with around 12–13 round tables. It was fairly spacious, so it seems like groups could use it too!

Celebrity autographs on the restaurant wall

There were celebrity autographs on the walls too, haha. Looking around, I saw there were several branches starting with the Busan main store! They say they sell only domestic female pork under six months old..!

Menu and what we ordered

Suyeong Naengsam menu

The menu. They had quick-frozen sliced pork, pork belly, pork neck, and pork jowl, all at ₩7,900 per 100 g! For sides, there were kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), doenjang jjigae (soybean-paste stew), fried rice, and bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles), and the prices were pretty reasonable.

We ordered three portions of quick-frozen sliced pork, two portions of pork belly, bibim guksu, and Zero Cola, haha. We thought about having fried rice too as we ate, but this was sooo filling for two people that we couldn't manage itㅠ So the total came to ₩45,000!

Order details

They also have a receipt-review event, so anyone interested should give it a try..

Which was better: quick-frozen sliced pork or pork belly?

The quick-frozen sliced pork and pork belly came out right away!

First, we grilled the 1–1.5 mm quick-frozen sliced pork! At first, a staff member explained how to cook it and grilled it for us, haha. You sprinkle salt onto the grill first, then put the meat on and cook it.

Because it was so thin, it only needed to be flipped once. It cooked very quickly, which was nice because we could eat it right away without much waiting.

Grilled quick-frozen sliced pork

They told us to try the very first piece without dipping it in anything, so I did! Since it was already salted, it was incredibly delicious on its own with no other sauce needed. The meat was really tender and nutty, definitely different from the quick-frozen pork I've usually had. The meat itself was genuinely great.

It was delicious plain, but the combination with green onion kimchi was great too.

Thick-cut quick-frozen pork belly

After having some quick-frozen sliced pork, we grilled the quick-frozen pork belly, which was under 4 mm thick. It was definitely thicker and had a different feel from the sliced pork. The sliced pork was easy to eat in one bite without cutting it with scissors, but the quick-frozen pork belly was a little too thick to eat straight in one bite, so I think it's better to cut it about in half first, haha. The quick-frozen pork belly was tender, nutty, and tasty too, but personally, I liked the soft, tender quick-frozen sliced pork better!!!

A meal rounded out with bibim guksu

The bibim guksu we ordered as a side was tangy and sweet, and it went quite well with the meat. These days, naengmyeon or noodles at barbecue places often cost around ₩7,000, but the quality here was good even at ₩3,500!!! It was way more delicious than expected, so it was a satisfying meal. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good-value quick-frozen pork spot in Daegu's Dongseong-ro.
