Gungdong kalguksu restaurant: seafood pajeon at Choi Jiseong's

In short

Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu is a Korean restaurant specialising in seafood kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) and seafood pajeon (green onion pancake), next to the Yuseong Culture Center in Gungdong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. The order was seafood kalguksu for two at 12,500 won per person, a tasting-size seafood pajeon at 9,000 won and a bottle of Chamisul soju, and the pajeon was so good that a second tasting plate followed. The lesson from Choi Jiseong's: order the 34cm pajeon at 15,000 won from the start.

Seafood kalguksu, seafood pajeon, grilled shrimp, naengmyeon, samgyetang, pork cutlet — Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu in Yuseong, Daejeon has it all.

A Yuseong restaurant you have to visit during shrimp season ✨ Here's my honest review after going and eating there myself.

Where is Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu, and what is the room like?

Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu is a sizeable Daejeon restaurant located in Gungdong near Yuseong Oncheon Station, right next to the Yuseong Culture Center. Being right by the culture center makes it easy to find, and parking is available too.

Dimly lit, cozy restaurant interior
Spacious dining hall full of customers

The interior is bigger than expected, and with the lighting kept dim it has a cozy vibe perfect for having a drink — Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu! Pretty bustling🧐 — seeing so many customers confirms it's a real local favorite!

Menu and prices: seafood kalguksu and the tasting-size seafood pajeon

Since the restaurant's name is literally Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu, the signature dish is of course the kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), and I love that you can add extra seafood toppings to your taste!

📌 Kalguksu can only be ordered for 2 people or more

Once I ordered, I noticed they also have grilled tiger prawns, naengmyeon, and pork cutlet, plus a naengmyeon+cutlet set — and if you order grilled tiger prawns, you get old-style whole fried chicken free! (The chicken isn't sold on its own, only comes as a bonus with the prawns.)

  • Seafood kalguksu, ₩12,500 per person x 2
  • Tasting seafood pajeon, ₩9,000
  • Chamisul soju, ₩5,000

Side dishes, the self-serve bar and tableware for kids

Once we ordered the kalguksu, they brought us a single-serving plate with chojang (vinegar-chili sauce), soy sauce, and kimchi —

and for extra side dishes, there's a self-serve bar. They even have kids' tableware ready, so it seems like a great spot for family meals out with children too.

How to eat the seafood kalguksu, and how the broth tastes

After a short wait, the seafood kalguksu arrived! The seafood is so generous, right? Abalone, shrimp, clams, squid — this kalguksu has it all!

Pot of seafood kalguksu topped with abalone and shrimp

The owner told us there's a proper order to eating the kalguksu for the best flavor, so I read through it carefully to make sure I did it right!

At first it comes out without the noodles, so once it comes to a rolling boil 🔥

they first prep the vegetables and seafood into easy-to-eat pieces! There's one shrimp and one abalone per person, and the abalone especially was super fresh!

Prepped seafood and vegetables arranged in the pot

I tried the broth first — clean, no gimmicks, just great flavor — so I immediately ordered soju! Can't resist soju with broth this good!!

Why to order the 34cm seafood pajeon instead of the tasting size

Along with the soju, the side dish seafood pajeon arrived, golden and crispy — so I dove straight into the pajeon first!

They give you a chili-flake soy sauce made specifically for pajeon, and it's honestly a perfect match.

After working through the veggies and seafood for a bit, I asked for the extra kalguksu noodles, and when they brought them out — look at that portion!

A generous extra serving of kalguksu noodles

When you think of Daejeon, kalguksu has to be on the list — if you're visiting Daejeon, definitely stop by Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu. A refreshing, clean-tasting kalguksu spot!

I was really, really full, but the seafood pajeon was so good that I ended up ordering another tasting-size seafood pajeon.

Definitely order the 34cm, ₩15,000 seafood pajeon from the start! Like me, if you order the tasting size, you'll end up ordering more anyway.

Grilled tiger prawns next time: Choi Jiseong's for solo diners and family meals

✔️ They're also running Instagram and Naver receipt reviews, so be sure to grab those review perks too :)

Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu has such a varied menu! Having so many options to choose from is great. I saw solo diners having samgyetang and also families dining together — a real mix of customers. And ordering grilled tiger prawns gets you a whole fried chicken free..! I saw another table's chicken and it looked big and delicious, so next time I'm coming back for the grilled shrimp!

A truly satisfying bowl of kalguksu packed with seafood! I recommend Choi Jiseong's Seafood Kalguksu in Yuseong, Daejeon.
