On Sunday evening, we went to Daehwa Sutbul Garden Siheung Janggok Branch for a family dinner. Since it was the weekend, we arrived around 6 p.m. While looking for a meat menu to enjoy with the kids, we decided to order the restaurant's signature Gyeongju-style marinated beef ribs.

We parked easily in the building and went into the restaurant.

The menu we ordered that day was the Gyeongju-style made-to-order marinated beef rib Special Platter (800g) set. It included not only beef ribs, but also handmade sausage, chicken cartilage meat, market-style kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), and ice cream, so we could try a variety of things together.

Starting with beef seaweed soup and side dishes

As they set out the side dishes, they also brought beef miyeokguk (seaweed soup).

The beef in the seaweed soup was so tender. It was tender enough to fall apart when I scooped it up with a spoon, so I found myself reaching for the soup before even getting to the meat. It was mild enough to share with the kids, so we each had a little soup to start the meal.

The main Gyeongju-style made-to-order marinated beef ribs arrived. The beef ribs were piled high with special seasoning and garlic, making them look delicious right away. Grilling them over charcoal added a subtle smoky aroma, and above all, the meat was really tender.

After one bite, it was tender enough that “melts in your mouth” felt like the right description.

The seasoning was milder than I expected. It was not the kind with an immediate hit of sweetness or saltiness, just a very light savory note, so I could taste the beef itself too. Grilling it with the garlic added a nutty flavor and gentle sweetness, and they went together really well.

Trying beef ribs wrapped in a tortilla

There was a note on the table saying that wrapping the ribs in a tortilla was a special treat, so we gave it a try. With grilled beef ribs and salsa wrapped in a tortilla, it felt different from the charcoal-grilled galbi we usually eat. The kids preferred the meat on its own, while the adults thought wrapping it in tortillas was fun too.

Chicken cartilage meat for the first time

Chicken cartilage meat with a soft-cartilage texture

After the beef ribs, we grilled the chicken cartilage meat. It was my first time trying it, and there was a slight soft-cartilage crunch here and there as I ate the chicken. But Child No. 2, who really likes this texture, ate it so well. They usually enjoy the crunchy texture of bones or cartilage, and must have really liked the chicken cartilage meat because they kept eating it.

The mildly spicy handmade sausage was also Child No. 2's favorite

We also grilled the handmade sausage included in the set. It had a slightly spicy flavor. It seemed to have the kind of heat you get from a little Cheongyang chili pepper, and Child No. 2, who likes spicy food, said it was delicious and ate the sausage well too. From the chicken cartilage meat to the handmade sausage, the set included dishes that Child No. 2 enjoyed, so they ate quite well that day, haha.

Finishing with market-style kalguksu and ice cream

After eating a fair amount of meat, we had the market-style kalguksu too. After continuously eating meat, the warm broth and noodles gave the meal a different feel. By the time we finished the kalguksu, we were quite full.

Ice cream was also included in the set, so we had it as dessert at the end. It came with red beans and cereal, which the kids especially liked.

Finishing the meal with cold ice cream after the meat left the kids satisfied too. That day, we tried each item in the set one by one, from beef ribs and chicken cartilage meat to handmade sausage, kalguksu, and ice cream. The main beef ribs were tender without overly strong seasoning, and each child found something they liked and ate well. What I remember most is that Child No. 2 loved both the cartilage texture of the chicken meat and the mildly spicy handmade sausage.

Family dinner finished with a beef rib set

Daehwa Sutbul Garden Siheung Janggok Branch was our Sunday-evening family outing. We ordered the restaurant's signature Gyeongju-style made-to-order marinated beef rib Special Platter (800g) set and worked our way from the beef ribs through the side dishes and dessert. Parking in the building was convenient, and with so many dishes to share, we had a hearty dinner out with the kids.
