Gyeongju Korean restaurant hangover lunch with beef mulhoe: Dongyang
In short
Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a quiet Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, known for its sumi chicken stew. On a weekday afternoon there was no wait, and the order was one medium sumi chicken stew (28,000 won), one regular Korean beef mulhoe (12,000 won) and two bowls of rice, with the cold raw beef mulhoe soothing the previous night's drinking. The boneless chicken stew is sweet rather than spicy, so Dongyang Baekban works just as well for families with kids.

So I went to Gyeongju a little while ago, and Gyeongju means Hwangridan-gil, right?! While hunting for a good Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil I found "Dongyang Baekban." True to Gyeongju form, the interior is so quiet and old-fashioned — I came on a weekday to take it slow. 😖
Where is Dongyang Baekban on Hwangridan-gil, and what does it look like?
Dongyang Baekban is located on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju 😉

It looks like a cozy old countryside house, warm and inviting — Dongyang Baekban, a Gyeongju spot with a stylish exterior that really fits the town...

Weekday afternoon at Dongyang Baekban: any wait, and how are the window seats?
Walk through the door and there are tables inside — the windows are wide and big, giving an open, airy feeling, and the weather was nice too, so it was great. I ate leisurely while looking out at the outdoor scenery. Since I came on a weekday, I luckily got seated with no wait.

Dongyang Baekban menu and prices: what we ordered
Dongyang Baekban's signature dish is sumi chicken stew (수미닭볶음탕)! Korean dishes like vegetable jjimdak, dureuchigi, beef tripe hot pot, and chicken hot pot make up the main menu. Here's what I ordered.
- Sumi chicken stew, medium (28,000 won)
- Beef mulhoe, regular (12,000 won)
- 2 bowls of rice
There are also so many rice options — pollock roe rice, chili rice, egg rice, yukhoe rice, fish roe rice, gamtae rice, gondre rice, and more — so it seems great to pick whichever suits your taste.

How to enjoy it best and the review event ‼️ — can't skip that part!

Is the Korean beef mulhoe at Dongyang Baekban good for a hangover?
I heard raw beef mulhoe is famous in Gyeongju, but I only found out and tried it that day! Hahahaha. I feel like whenever I come to Gyeongju I always eat the tteokgalbi set meal or something, so I had no idea the raw beef mulhoe was the famous thing. I was craving something cold and refreshing so I chose it, and the rich, deep broth was so delicious — perfect to eat alongside the main dish!

A cold raw beef mulhoe piled high with beef. I had been drinking the night before, and it was fantastic as a hangover cure, so refreshing hahahahaha. I usually cure hangovers with naengmyeon or something cold, and this raw beef mulhoe was exactly right. If you overdo it drinking on your Gyeongju trip, I recommend coming to Dongyang Baekban the next day for the raw beef mulhoe ₍ᐢ ๑ • 𖥦 • ๑ ᐢ₎ ♡

What side dishes come with the meal?
Four basic side dishes! Having banchan come out felt like home cooking, which I liked. The overall seasoning was just right and solidly good across the board.

They serve rice along with dried seaweed flakes like this — mixing it into the chicken stew broth is unbelievably delicious...

Is the medium sumi chicken stew (28,000 won) enough for two?
Here's the main sumi chicken stew! I ordered the medium size and it was plenty for two people to share. It's a sweet chicken stew with no spiciness at all. There's a cute egg on top hahahahaha. It comes boneless, and glass noodles are mixed in too.

They scooped a full ladle into the little plate of seaweed flakes for us. Can you tell how fragrant the seaweed is?

Honestly, in chicken stew I actually love the potatoes, onions, and glass noodles more than the meat itself hahahahahaha. The fluffy potatoes are so good. Cooked to just the right point 😖😖

Since the meat comes boneless, it's easy to eat cleanly, and I guess that's also considerate given how many foreign tourists visit. The meat also wasn't dry chicken breast — it seemed like they mostly used tender chicken thigh meat!

Is Dongyang Baekban worth it for Korean food on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju?
I polished off the chicken stew, glass noodles and all, since I love them so much..... 😖 Overall this is a Hwangridan-gil restaurant that isn't spicy at all, so kids can eat it easily too — Dongyang Baekban. If you're looking for good Korean food in Gyeongju, I recommend Dongyang Baekban, where you can eat Korean food in a quiet, old-fashioned atmosphere ‼️
