Ikseon-dong bakery cheese rice bread vs garlic bread: Munhwa Bakery
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a hanok-style bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station. A writer from Daejeon who compares bakeries region by region returned yet again and took home Munhwa Bakery's signature garlic bread and cheese rice bread, eating the garlic bread both straight from the bag and reheated in an air fryer. With a wide range of breads and seasoning and texture that both land just right, Munhwa Bakery is worth building a Seoul bakery-hopping route around.

I'm from Daejeon, the hometown of bread, so whenever I visit another region I always make a habit of touring the local bakeries — because I think every bakery has its own distinct charm.
For example, if you compare the famous Sungsimdang and Lee Sung Dang bakeries: Sungsimdang tends to balance the toppings and the bread's seasoning together, so the bread itself feels a bit mild, whereas Lee Sung Dang seasons the toppings properly but also lets the seasoning soak into the bread itself — that kind of feel!
I like comparing bakeries this way as I eat my way through them, and this time I went to a famous bakery in Ikseon-dong, Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵).

Where is Munhwa Bakery and how do you get there?

True to its name, "Munhwa Bakery" had a striking hanok (traditional Korean house)-style design — the shop itself was so pretty I was already loving it before I even walked in, haha. The store is small, but well put together and tightly packed with good stuff.

What breads does Munhwa Bakery have in store?
There was a whole pile of bread out for the day! Here are the photos, haha.

Munhwa Bakery's signature: the garlic bread
This is my Nth revisit here, and I think their signature is obviously the garlic bread! The combo of the moderately sweet, moist garlic sauce and the baguette is just so delicious.

Next time I need to try the coffee bread!

The prices also feel just right even for Ikseon-dong, which I appreciate even more.

Garlic bread and cheese rice bread, eaten at home
Picked up the cheese rice bread and garlic bread!

Garlic bread, plain and air-fried
I tried it plain and also crisped up in the air fryer — both are delicious in their own way, but I'd especially recommend the crispy air-fried version.
Eaten plain, it's moist with a subtle garlic aroma and a touch of sweetness — honey-sweet. Crisped up, it's nice and crunchy too.

Cheese rice bread
Packed with cheese, nutty and chewy — so good 👍
So there you have it! Today I went to Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong — the bread lineup is varied and satisfying, and every single piece was delicious. The seasoning is spot on and the texture is great! If you're looking for a stop on your Seoul bakery-hopping route, this is it!
