Mangwon-dong bossam and mild anchovy noodle soup: Pyeongidambaek
In short
Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is a bossam and kalguksu Korean restaurant between Hapjeong and Mangwon in Mapo, Seoul. Over dinner the writer had a medium bossam (boiled pork with cabbage wraps) with anchovy kalguksu (noodle soup), 5,000 won when ordered with bossam and topped with fried tofu and egg ribbons; even with the spicy sauce set aside the broth tasted clean, and the pork melted with just a dab of salted shrimp. Pyeongidambaek is a good fit for a warm, filling meal on a chilly evening.

I was looking for somewhere to eat dinner in Mangwon-dong when I got a craving for bossam (boiled pork belly)! Today I visited Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch, tucked between Hapjeong and Mangwon and known for its deep, rich broth and tidy cooking. It's the perfect spot when you want a warm, filling meal or a glass of something alongside tender pork.
Location and parking at Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch
Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is located at 84 Yanghwa-ro 7-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, 1st floor. It's about a 5–7 minute walk from Exit 2 of Hapjeong Station on Lines 2 and 6.
It's also easily reachable on foot from Mangwon Station, making it a good stop to pair with a Mangwon-dong/Hapjeong-dong date course.
Parking is tight right in front of the store, so if you're driving, I'd recommend using a nearby public or paid parking lot.
Exterior and interior

The storefront has a big, tidy sign that's easy to spot. Overall the wood tones and warm lighting come together for a cozy, comfortable dining atmosphere.

There's also a discount available for firefighters, military, and police officers.

A new geoduck kalguksu menu item just launched, and it's on discount too. Great value!

'A clean, unpretentious bowl' — the phrase seems to sum up this place's whole motto!

The interior is laid out efficiently, with seats ranging from solo-diner spots to tables for four for friends, couples, or families.

I ordered the medium bossam, and since anchovy kalguksu is only ₩5,000 with a bossam order, I added that too~

The place is surprisingly spacious toward the back, and by evening it was packed. Definitely a real local favorite!

Apparently they also won the 2024 Innovative Korean Award!

Even the apron shows a lot of care.
Side dishes

Geotjeori (fresh unfermented kimchi). Crisp and crunchy, like it was tossed fresh every day.

Kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi). Mildly spicy and a bit sweet, an amazing match with the noodles or the pork.

The main dishes finally arrived, so let's go through them one by one.
Anchovy kalguksu, ₩5,000 — can you skip the spicy sauce?

Pyeongidambaek's anchovy kalguksu is a no-pressure, satisfying dish you can get for just ₩5,000 with a bossam order — great value in these prices-are-crazy times.

The deeply steeped anchovy broth has a rich, subtle savoriness and clears your palate refreshingly. It comes with a side of spicy sauce (dadaegi) — if you can't handle spice or you're eating with kids, you could ask them to leave it out! I'm a spice wimp myself, so I scooped it off, and it was still clean and delicious.

The noodles have a springy, chewy texture that makes for great slurping.

It suddenly got chilly recently, so slurping this warm soup was the best.

Loaded with fried tofu and egg ribbons, it even had a bit of an udon feel to it — and it was seriously delicious.
Medium bossam with napa cabbage and dried radish wraps
The medium bossam (boiled pork belly) at Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch catches your eye the moment it hits the table, glistening with a beautiful sheen.

The meat is boiled tender with no gamy smell, with lean meat and just the right amount of fat neatly arranged — it melts the moment it hits your mouth.

The crisp, sweet napa cabbage that comes alongside is fresh and pairs perfectly with the pork. A cabbage refill is an extra ₩2,000.

The spicy-sweet, chewy dried radish was a surprisingly nice touch too.

And of course, raw garlic and chili peppers are essential for cutting through the richness of the meat.

The pork is so moist and soft that even dipped only in salted shrimp, it melts the moment it hits your mouth.

The ratio of lean meat to fat is perfect!

Wrap a piece of tender pork in the crisp, sweet napa cabbage, add some spicy-sweet chewy dried radish, and each bite bursts with layers of texture and flavor.
To sum up
If you're in the Hapjeong or Mangwon area craving carefully made, tender bossam and warm kalguksu, definitely stop by Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch. The combination of an affordable anchovy kalguksu and a well-executed medium bossam makes for a meal that people of any age would enjoy!
