Jeonju Wansan-gu Vietnamese lunch with bulgogi banh mi: Phodam

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but lately I prefer mild food like Vietnamese over anything too spicy or heavy, so I tried Vietnamese food for lunch again on this Jeonju business trip. It turned out way better than expected — here's my Jeonju restaurant review of Phodam!

A lot of older customers were coming in, which made me think this must be a real local favorite haha. You all know how picky moms and dads can be with their taste, right? So my expectations were already sky-high before we even ordered.

Where is Phodam Jeonju City Hall Branch, and what is it like inside?

Phodam Jeonju City Hall Branch is located at 262-9 Paldal-ro, Wansan-gu, Jeonju, Jeonbuk. The inside was much bigger than it looked from outside, spacious enough to seat groups.

I had no idea the inside would be this big from looking at it outside, but once I stepped in, the seating was pretty generous. A group of people came in and dined together while we were there too! I thought this would be a great spot for a group gathering or company dinner next time.

What's on the menu at Phodam?

The Phodam menu focuses on authentic Vietnamese dishes — bun cha, banh xeo, pho, banh mi sandwiches, cha gio (fried spring rolls), fresh spring rolls, and more. The decor around the restaurant has a Vietnamese vibe too, which made picking a dish extra fun.

The overall atmosphere and the little Vietnamese-style props scattered around made the interior feel refreshingly different, like I wasn't even in Korea — I really liked it.

The table had two sauces for dipping the fresh spring rolls and meat, tissues, paper cups, and a bottle of cold water.

Four dishes two of us ordered for a work lunch

At Phodam we ordered four dishes: pho, fresh spring rolls, bulgogi banh mi, and banh xeo. I wanted to try this and that, so we just went ahead and ordered everything haha.

Phodam pho (Vietnamese beef noodle soup)

First, the pho — the broth wasn't harsh at all, deep and clean-tasting, so it sat really easy on the stomach. There was plenty of noodles and bean sprouts inside, so if I'd eaten it alone I would've been stuffed.

The crisp bean sprouts soaked in broth and the big chunks of brisket made it satisfying and flavorful — I just kept slurping it up.

I believe this comes automatically with the banh xeo order — chili sauce, vegetables, and rice paper with tongs. It was fresh and the plating came out so neat and tidy that I was honestly a bit surprised.

Banh xeo (crispy Vietnamese rice pancake)

This was my first time trying banh xeo, and inside the crispy Vietnamese-style savory pancake there were bean sprouts, shrimp, and pork bulgogi-like filling — not too intense in flavor, and honestly really good.

It's delicious wrapped in rice paper and dipped in sauce, and just as good eaten on its own — crispy on the outside, crunchy bean sprouts inside, tender meat, and perfectly seasoned. Even after I was full, I kept eating it until the very last bite.

Fresh spring rolls at Phodam

The fresh spring rolls came wrapped in plastic wrap, with meat and vegetables rolled up in rice paper. Dip in sauce and eat in one bite — clean and satisfying. I decided right then I'd order this again next time!

Another reason Phodam stands out is that every single dish is made 100% by hand. Unlike typical restaurants that rely on premade sauces or semi-finished products, Phodam apparently uses its own recipes developed through years of research and effort.

Bulgogi banh mi at Phodam

Is there anything here that isn't good? Pretty much everything we ordered was above average, so honestly, not a single dish that day was a miss — we ate happily through all of it. My coworker, who's tried banh mi at several places, said this one was really tasty.

Cut with scissors into bite-sized pieces, great for picking up and eating. Writing this is making me want it again ㅠ If you're looking for a good pho spot or Vietnamese food in Jeonju, I highly recommend Phodam.
