Yongsan tteokbokki restaurant: medium spice level vs shin ramyun
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant near Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station in Seoul. The 26,000 won Hyeonseonine combo set ordered at medium spice turned out hotter than shin ramyun and just under buldak bokkeum myeon, cooled down with self-serve fried crumbs and fish cake broth, and the writer left with an empty table. A place worth returning to whenever you're craving deliciously spicy tteokbokki.

I finally made it to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, known as the mecca of spicy tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) in Seoul! It's famous enough to have appeared on celebrity Kang Min-kyung's YouTube channel, and tteokbokki fans consider it a must-visit stop, so I went in with high expectations. Spoiler: I was completely satisfied, and my revisit intention is 200%!

Walkable from Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station
It's located not far from Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station, so accessibility is great. The space keeps a bit of the old street-cart charm while being neatly renovated, making it feel both nostalgic and comfortable to eat in. Waits can get long on weekends or at peak times, so I'd recommend timing your visit a little off-peak. Check the operating hours below~

Kiosk ordering and how to use the self-serve fried crumbs
Ordering is easy through the kiosk installed at the entrance. You can pick everything from tteokbokki spice level to whether the sundae (Korean blood sausage) includes organs and which type of fritter you want, which was really convenient. The self-serve bar has pickled radish, soy sauce, and fried crumbs (tenkasu) neatly set out — and definitely try dumping a generous amount of the crispy crumbs into the tteokbokki sauce and mixing it in, it doubles the nutty flavor and crunchy texture!

What's in the ₩26,000 Hyeonseonine combo set
With such a huge menu, if you're not sure what to order, the set menus are the way to go. We ordered the Hyeonseonine combo set, the restaurant's signature generous combo. It costs 26,000 won, but the portion is so generous it didn't feel wasteful at all.

Don't forget to pair the spicy tteokbokki with the soft, sweet Coolpis drink! It's the perfect deliciously spicy flavor to melt away everyday stress — if you're in Yongsan, don't hesitate to enjoy this excellent snack food.

In-store review lucky draw event
While eating happily, I noticed a review event running inside the store! If you participate with a receipt review or similar, you can join a nostalgic lucky draw. It's a fun little extra, and if you're lucky you might even take home a prize — don't forget to join in if you visit!

How spicy is the medium spice level, really?
The most important part — how spicy is the tteokbokki! Hyeonseonine is so famous for its spicy tteokbokki that I worried the spicy option would be too much, so I went with medium. But the heat came through much stronger than expected.
Personally, it felt clearly spicier than shin ramyun! It was slightly below or about on par with buldak bokkeum myeon in terms of deliciously spicy intensity. It wasn't an artificial capsaicin burn but an addictive spiciness that clings to your mouth — I was sweating buckets but kept reaching for more. The chewy rice cakes were soaked through with sauce and absolutely delicious.

How the fritters, mini gimbap, and sundae work together
The pairing with everything else on the table was insane too. Right when the heat builds up, a sip of the savory fish cake broth cools things down, and dipping the crispy fritters and mini gimbap (seaweed rice roll) into the tteokbokki sauce makes for a perfect combo. The sundae (Korean blood sausage) had no off smell at all and was wonderfully chewy, so I finished it and the broth without leaving anything behind. It felt like the 'all-star game' of Korean snack food — plenty for two or three people, and a perfectly filling combo.

A line waiting on the way out, plus nonstop takeout and delivery
Walking out, there was indeed a line, true to a Yongsan Station famous spot, haha. Seeing takeout and delivery orders keep coming in too, I could tell this place is truly recognized by locals and snack food fanatics alike. The interior is comfortable enough for chatting with friends over a meal, and it's also the perfect place to relieve stress with some spicy food.

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch — now I understand its fame firsthand. Whenever I'm craving deliciously spicy tteokbokki or want to enjoy a generously filled snack meal, I think this is exactly what will come to mind. I'll definitely be back soon to taste that spicy broth again!
