Sunset railway garden café in Paju: On the Rail

I found a café with a special atmosphere while I was near Imjingak in Paju.

On the Rail (온더레일)

This is a large Paju café with an outdoor garden, and what impressed me most was that a railway runs right beside it—so you can sit at the café and watch trains go by.

I visited in the afternoon and stayed until sunset. In the daytime, I enjoyed the lush green garden atmosphere, and near sunset I got to see the special sight of the railway and sky glowing together.

Location and parking near Imjingak Pyeonghwa Nuri Park

It was in a great spot to stop for a rest after visiting Imjingak or Pyeonghwa Nuri Park. There is dedicated parking right in front of the café, so it was easy to come by car, and the whole surrounding area felt quiet and relaxed even before I went inside.

A railway-inspired exterior

The exterior was a simple building that looked a bit like a converted large warehouse. Just like the café’s name, railway-inspired details were tucked around the outdoor area,

In particular, the short stretch of rail and signs beside the building really gave it an On the Rail-only atmosphere. It is not just a railway concept in name, either—the fact that real trains actually pass right beside the café was an even bigger draw.

High ceilings and spacious indoor seating

With high ceilings and large picture windows, it had the open feel typical of a large café. Wood and plants gave the space an overall warm, comfortable mood. The tables were fairly well spaced, with everything from seats for groups to window seats, and the outdoor view through the big windows meant it felt less closed-in even indoors.

An outdoor garden among trees and lawn

One of my favorite parts of On the Rail was its broad outdoor garden, laid out almost like a forest. Paths ran through the grass and trees like walking trails, with tables, parasols, and even hut-style seating dotted around.

It felt like such a nice place to sit outside on pleasant days like these. Pets are welcome too, so it seems like a good option for anyone visiting with their dog.

On the Rail’s cat, Raili

While I was outside, I also met an adorable cat. It lives at the café, and its name is Raili—a perfect match for the café’s name.

Raili seemed to like people quite a bit, coming close for head bumps and acting all sweet. When someone called, “Raili!” from far away, Raili somehow knew and came running over from the distance 🥹

Bakery treats from salt bread to green onion cheese toast

There were filling options such as classic salt bread, croissants, and green onion cheese toast, along with dessert items including cookies, pound cake, and tarts.

From sweet desserts to breads substantial enough for a meal, it felt like a good place to stop when you get hungry after looking around Imjingak. The drinks menu was varied too, with coffee such as Americanos and café lattes, latte drinks including sweet potato latte, tea, and smoothies.

What I ordered

• Sweet potato latte
• Green onion cheese toast
• Salt bread

Among the bakery items, the green onion cheese toast caught my eye, so I chose it along with salt bread. The toast was generously topped with cheese and filled with green onion, with a nutty, savory-salty flavor that I think would suit people who like more meal-like breads.

The salt bread was easy to enjoy with coffee. For drinks, I ordered an Americano and sweet potato latte, and the breads and drinks together made a nice simple snack.

Trains passing beside the café

What I remember most about On the Rail was the view of trains passing by. Since an actual railway runs beside the café, if the timing works out, you can see trains going past from quite close up.

You can watch trains pass from outside, or sit in the café and have fun waiting for one to come by. It is a scene you do not often get at an ordinary café, so I think it would be fun to visit with children who love trains, too.

When the sun started to set, the long orange light streaming along the railway was so pretty. It did not feel like a flashy photo spot that had been artificially created; the real tracks and sunset blended together naturally, which made for even more atmospheric photos.

The garden after the lights come on

Once the sun had completely set, the café’s mood changed again.

Lights came on throughout the garden, along with the bulbs hanging from the trees, making it feel a little cozier than in the daytime. I loved the garden’s lush green scenery during the day, while at night the lit paths and outdoor seats were beautiful.

On the Rail closes at 2 a.m. Since it stays open late, it is a plus that you can stop by even when looking for a café after dinner in Paju.

On the Rail, lovely from day to night

With its spacious indoor space and outdoor garden, it was easy to spend time at a relaxed pace. There were also plenty of bakery and drink choices, making it a nice stop after an outing to Imjingak. Above all, trains pass right next to the café, and at sunset you can see the sky beyond the tracks, giving it a charm different from other large cafés in Paju.

I visited during the day, looked around the garden, and rested over coffee and bread. Then I watched the railway near sunset, and at night the garden lights gave the place yet another atmosphere. It was a café worth adding to an Imjingak date or a Paju drive course :)
