I went on a Suwon outing after a while! Since I'd made it all the way out to Suwon, I wanted to eat something delicious at a nice-atmosphere Western restaurant and spend some relaxed time, so I looked around and ended up at The European Haenggung Main Branch.

Where is The European Haenggung Main Branch, and what are its hours?

The European Haenggung Main Branch is at 21-1 Haenggung-ro, 1st floor, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. Business hours are 11:30–21:30, with last order at 21:00.

Exterior of The European, looking like a converted house

When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was that it felt more like a converted house than a typical restaurant. Firewood was stacked neatly to one side of the entrance, giving off a feel like I'd arrived at some small European countryside cottage — warm and cozy. Since it's a wood-fired pizza place, seeing the firewood before even going in already got my expectations up for the food 🤎

Inside The European: an antique dining room

If the exterior felt like a cozy house, stepping inside completely changed the mood. The interior is decorated with classic furniture and props, so it felt much more elegant and atmospheric than I expected. Soft lighting combined with that antique feel made me feel like I'd walked into an old European restaurant.

The space also went back deeper than I expected, so there were quite a lot of seats. There were seats set up for groups too, which seemed good for family gatherings or visits with several people. If you're planning a group visit, I'd recommend reserving ahead so you can get the seats you want :) Baby chairs are also available, so it felt fine to visit with a kid. The restrooms were gender-separated too, which was convenient.

Wine collection lining a full wall

The wine wall and the corkage-free event at The European

One wall of The European Haenggung Main Branch was densely lined with wine bottles — the collection was really something! 🍷 The neatly arranged bottles matched the elegant atmosphere of the space really well. If you like wine, browsing the wall alone would be pretty fun :)

※Corkage is normally ₩20,000 per bottle, but a corkage-free event is running from September 18 to November 30.

What I ordered was the signature Arugula Jamón Burrata Cheese pizza. As soon as the plate came out, it looked so pretty — jamón and burrata cheese piled generously on top of vivid green arugula. 🥗🤍 The burrata sat round and soft in the middle, and when you cut into it, the creamy cheese inside spread out gently. The dough, fermented for 18 hours and aged for 24 hours, is baked at a scorching 485°C in a premium Stefano Ferrara wood-fired oven, making the pizza chewy and crunchy.

The bitter, fragrant arugula, salty jamón, and savory, soft burrata cheese came together really well. Especially since each flavor didn't stay separate but built on the others when eaten together, it made for a great starting dish for the meal. It had a clean yet upscale taste that would pair really well with wine too.

I heard this place is run by a chef with 10 years of experience at the Seoul Shilla Hotel, which made me even more excited about the food. Tasting it, I understood why. The subtle bitterness of the arugula, the salty jamón, and the soft, savory burrata came together with really good balance. Each ingredient's flavor felt clean and distinct, and the overall combination worked well — a dish that really showed the chef's experience.

Is The European the Haenggung-dong restaurant for you?

From the house-like exterior to the elegant interior, plus delicious food on top of it, this was a great place to have an unhurried meal after a while. In particular, each dish felt carefully prepared, and the atmosphere was nice enough for a date, a family gathering, or a special occasion. If you're looking for a nice-atmosphere Western restaurant in Suwon, it's worth a visit at least once.
