Paju bakery café with cod roe salt bread you pack yourself: Barirus

I went on a solo drive to Paju on a Sunday morning. There was a place I'd been curious about for a while after hearing it was huge — it's Barirus, which comes up a lot when you search for good food in Paju!

It's a place with brunch and handmade bakery items too, so I headed out with high expectations haha.

Where is Barirus, what are the hours, and how is parking?

Barirus is on the 2nd floor of 245 Bongseosan-ro, Paju-eup, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Hours are Mon–Thu 10:00–21:00, and Fri/Sat/Sun/holidays 10:00–02:00. Since it's open until 2am on Fri, Sat, and Sun, it'd be good for a late visit too. But kitchen orders stop at 20:00, so keep that in mind if you're planning to eat a meal.

I drove there, and I was surprised the moment I arrived. It was way bigger than I expected — I wondered if this was really a café parking lot. The lot is huge and can fit up to about 300 cars. I also saw an EV charger.

I went around Sunday opening time, and parking wasn't difficult at all. Having zero parking stress alone is a big plus on a drive-out day :)

Inside the second floor and the sunset media photo zone

Barirus café is on the 2nd floor of the building. The first thing that caught my eye walking in was the giant sunset media photo zone. The screen was so big that I just stood there watching for a while without even taking a photo. The interior had high ceilings and felt wide open.

There were also tree decorations, so it was fun to look around! And it was really so spacious that walking around took some effort haha.

Since I went around Sunday opening time, it didn't feel crowded — though maybe there were people and it just looked sparse because the place is so big. Either way, I could look around at a relaxed pace without feeling packed in.

The outdoor lawn terrace at Barirus

Step outside Barirus and a lawn terrace opens up. There are tables with a glamping feel, and the open view made it feel like getting some fresh air. It's spacious enough for kids to run around, so it looked good for families too.

If you're looking for a meeting spot recommendation for family or friends, this is worth putting on the list. The seating is spacious, so it seemed less stressful even with a bigger group. I was alone, so I just stared at the scenery for a while haha.

What I ordered at Barirus and what it cost

I originally planned to try a brunch dish. But the moment I saw the bakery display case, my plan changed. I ended up grabbing a bunch of different breads instead. Here are the four breads I bought that day. For a drink I picked Barirus's signature menu item, the Bari Schüpfer.

How did the garlic naan, cod roe salt bread and baguette taste?

I picked up the garlic naan first since it's said to be Barirus's signature bread. It was slightly sweet with a subtle garlic aroma, which I liked. Some garlic breads have way too strong a garlic smell, but this one didn't leave your mouth smelling of garlic haha.

When I warmed up the cod roe salt bread, the butter aroma got even richer and stickier... this was my top pick, the cod roe salt bread haha. If I visit Barirus again, it'll probably be because I'm craving the cod roe salt bread 🐷

I took the ciabatta and baguette home. I made a sandwich with the baguette — it was chewy and light, and honestly tasted great even just torn apart and eaten plain! There were so many types of bread that it took quite a while to choose.

How the self-service packing station and microwave work

Since Barirus is such a large bakery café, packing and using the microwave are both self-service! At a café that's super busy, asking staff to pack up leftover food can sometimes feel like a hassle, so having it be fully self-service was actually a plus!

For the bread you warm up, you just cut off however much you want and use the microwave :)

Is the signature Bari Schüpfer worth 8,000 won?

The Bari Schüpfer had a slightly orange tint that made me think of carrots(?), but it was a sweet Einspänner haha. I'd guessed it would be good since I saw a separate roasting space, and sure enough, the coffee was delicious haha. I'd picked a salty(?) bread, so drinking it alongside made for a great sweet-and-salty combo :)

Where to go near Barirus in Paju

Near Barirus you'll find Paju Premium Outlets, Imjingak, Peace Nuri Park, and Byeokchoji Arboretum. So it's also great to combine with a trip to nearby spots. If you're looking for good food and cafés in Paju, planning a route around here should be easy. Next time I definitely want to try the brunch menu I missed!!

Before going, all I'd heard was that it was big, but seeing it in person, it was even more than that. A huge parking lot, an open lawn terrace, a giant sunset photo zone, and so many kinds of bread. It was a great place to spend some relaxed solo time while out on a drive. And it'd also be a good meeting spot recommendation for family or friends. If you're looking for good food in Paju along with a large bakery café, it's worth a visit :)
