Poi-dong gamjatang restaurant with perilla-seed broth: Chomu Gamjatang

In short

Chomu Gamjatang is a pork bone stew (gamjatang) restaurant on Nonhyeon-ro in Seocho-gu, Seoul, 933m from Exit 2 of Yangjae Citizen's Forest Station. A small pot costs 35,000 won and arrives in a thick broth loaded with perilla seed powder, so a bowl of rice goes in first and fried rice is stir-fried in the pot at the end. The meat was so plentiful that leftovers went home in a takeout box, making Chomu Gamjatang a filling pick near Poi-dong and Yangjaecheon.

Inside Chomu Gamjatang: seating and atmosphere

Walking into Chomu Gamjatang, the interior was pretty spacious! Lots of tables and plenty of room, which made it look great for family meals out or visits with a bigger group. But when we visited, the place was so packed it felt like every seat in that huge space was taken..! Every table was full, hard to spot an empty seat 🫢

The tables were set up nicely for groups sitting around together, and I saw everyone from families to friend groups to gatherings. Once we sat down, we started getting hungry, so let's go ahead and order!🥺

Menu and what we ordered at Chomu Gamjatang

Chomu Gamjatang had everything from the main gamjatang and ppyeojjim to single-serving meals like bone haejangguk and pork cutlet. Gamjatang comes in small ₩35,000 / medium ₩43,000 / large ₩51,000! If you're visiting with a group, just pick the size that matches your headcount. Since I came here with only gamjatang on my mind, ordering was a no-brainer!

🥢 Side dishes and table setup

The kimchi is slightly spicy, and the cubed radish kimchi is a rice thief

After ordering, the basic side dishes that go well with gamjatang come out first. Even the side dishes looked amazing!!! If you run out while eating, you can grab as much as you want from the self-serve corner (it's all there!)

First look at the gamjatang: ugeoji greens and pork

All the setup done, and here comes the gamjatang we'd been waiting for 🥔

Ah, I picked the right menu today?! Now I totally understand why I was craving gamjatang in this chilly weather. The moment each of us got a bone in front of us, we all got quiet, too focused on eating haha

And as gamjatang keeps simmering while you eat, the broth gets even richer than it started, right? Eating the ugeoji (napa cabbage greens) and meat together, then spooning up the broth — this was exactly what I wanted on a chilly day..🫶🏻 Piping hot and it warmed me right up 😎

Wow, the visuals are seriously insane!!!!!!! I need to go back, my mouth is watering.. drool.....😵‍💫

Thick perilla seed broth that begs for a bowl of rice

Okay, the meat is great, but the broth here is truly a work of art. It's loaded with perilla powder, so the broth is really rich and delicious! With that nutty perilla flavor added on top, the broth is thick and deep, and while eating I naturally started thinking about plain white rice..

I was definitely planning to finish with fried rice, right? But not eating white rice with this broth..? That just didn't feel right, so I ordered a bowl of rice first haha. If I'd held off because I was saving room for fried rice, I would've regretted it so much haha

And we were genuinely eating hard, okay? We were already several bones deep and there was still meat left. Warning: it felt like no matter how much we ate, more kept appearing — the portion size was seriously no joke haha. It looked generous from the start, but the more we ate, the more we realized just how much there was.. Boss, are you sure you're making money giving out this much..? Thanks to that, we ended up very full and very happy, woof woof 🐷🐽

But guys, it's not over yet. The main event — fried rice — is still to come.

No matter how full you are after gamjatang, you've gotta eat the fried rice. When they toss the rice into the leftover broth and fry it up properly, somehow you find the strength to pick up your spoon again haha

The gamjatang broth itself was rich and nutty from all that perilla powder, so how could rice fried in that broth possibly taste bad.. It's delicious straight away while it's hot, but I actually prefer waiting until it gets slightly crispy at the bottom. Scraping up every last crispy bit with your spoon.. We'd all just said we were full a moment ago, but in front of the fried rice everyone quietly kept spooning away haha. In the end, we cleaned the whole thing up to the very last bite.

Is Chomu Gamjatang worth it? Final verdict

I was already surprised by the amount of meat the moment the gamjatang arrived, but after eating it, this isn't just a place with big portions — the flavor was on point too!

The broth, rich and nutty with all that perilla powder, was exactly my taste, and with so much meat packed in, I never felt like anything was lacking the whole meal — I ate until I was genuinely stuffed ◡̈

I heard the owner personally preps the ingredients from early dawn every day, and from the generous portions to the flavor, it was satisfying the entire time.

Above all, when we visited, the spacious restaurant was packed full of customers, and after eating there, I could totally see why so many people come.

If you're craving something hot and rich in this chilly weather these days, this place is worth a visit 🍲 I'm planning to go back for another pot once it gets even colder haha

Picking meat off the bone, mixing rice into the broth, finishing off with fried rice, and packing the leftover meat to go — I really did everything you can possibly do at a gamjatang restaurant. Ate well and got full again today haha
