Ingye-dong donkatsu restaurant, spicy golbaengi noodle set: Gyewondang

There are all kinds of restaurants in Ingye-dong, but I'd heard the cutlets — both donkatsu and chicken katsu — at Gyewondang Ingye Branch (계원당 인계점) were especially good, so I went to check it out. I thought only the chicken cutlet was the standout, but honestly, more of the menu was delicious than I expected!

Where is Gyewondang Ingye Branch, and where do you park?

Gyewondang Ingye Branch sits in what locals call the Ingye-dong "box" area. It's a bit of a walk from Suwon City Hall Station but close to the KBS Suwon Center, so public transit is the way to go.

There's basement parking in the building, with room for about 6–7 cars. If it's full, just ask a staff member — they'll let you park in the space in front of the store!

Inside Gyewondang: a retro Korean-Western diner look

Inside, Gyewondang Ingye Branch has that retro feel of an old-fashioned Korean-Western diner, you know? 🫢 There's a mix of 2- and 4-person tables, so it works whether you're eating solo or with a group. I hear this is also a popular lunch spot for office workers in Ingye-dong.

Haven't been somewhere with this vibe in a while!

The Gyewondang lunch sets that caught our eye on the menu

The Gyewondang menu board. We showed up starving, so we just skimmed and ordered. My own pick probably would've been fried chicken rather than the basic chicken cutlet, haha, but oh well. There were several chicken rice-bowl options, and the chojagangmyeon (cold chicken noodles) and cutlets looked great too, but what really caught my eye was the lunch set. The standard set comes with stir-fried pork, curry, chicken cutlet, 5 side dishes, and soup — what a lineup!

Self-service corner, tray return and the in-store event

Near the counter there's a self-service station with basic side dishes and takeout supplies, free to use. Not pictured, but right next to it there were also disposable aprons — handy!

You can get soda or coffee for ₩900 — the coffee is capsule coffee, which I thought was a neat touch!

After eating, you just return your tray to the bus station.

There's also an event promotion at Gyewondang — the free item you get depends on your party size, worth noting!

What we ordered: sirloin cutlet, chicken cutlet, golbaengi noodle set and chicken nanban

The wet wipes in the drawer under the table were cute, had to snap a photo.

Soda, ₩900. No bottled or canned drinks here — just ₩900 per person for unlimited soda refills. There's Fanta Orange, Zero Cola, Sprite, and Cola, so everyone can pick their favorite.

Handmade sirloin cutlet, ₩12,000. My mom wanted something other than chicken, so she ordered the Gyewondang handmade sirloin cutlet. It comes standard with egg fried rice, but you can swap to black rice at no extra charge.

Gyewon chicken cutlet, ₩12,900 — an Ingye-dong favorite. I went back and forth but figured I should order the signature dish, so I picked the chicken cutlet, and honestly the presentation alone was a win! It's made with 100% chicken thigh meat, and besides the standard demi-glace sauce you get to pick one more — I went with tartar.

Spicy-tangy golbaengi noodle set, ₩13,900. My youngest sister was going to just get the curry, but spotted the golbaengi noodle set and switched to that. It comes generously loaded — not just the noodles but chicken cutlet, curry rice, and side dishes too 🫢

Chicken nanban lunch set, ₩10,900 — another Ingye-dong favorite. My other sister loves Japanese-style chicken nanban, so the moment she saw it on the menu she added it to the order. This came with butter chicken curry too — so many flavors on one table!

How the meal at Gyewondang Ingye Branch tasted

The batter on the Gyewondang cutlets looked really crispy, and I liked that the parts touched by the demi-glace sauce didn't get soggy quickly. The cabbage salad on the side was tasty too!

The golbaengi noodles seemed to use somyeon (thin wheat noodles), and everything — noodles, vegetables, seasoning — came pre-tossed, so you could dig in right away.

The chicken nanban had tender thigh meat drizzled generously with tartar sauce, which made it taste a bit lighter and fresher.

Seasoned black beans, pickled radish, meat patties, and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) — exactly the side dishes you want with rice! They're the familiar, homestyle kind that office workers would love for lunch.

The butter chicken curry was a bit thinner than I expected, but it was nice to enjoy so many different flavors in one meal.

The chicken cutlet also uses juicy thigh meat, so if you like a softer texture, you'll be satisfied.

The egg fried rice was tasty too — finished the whole thing!

When things start feeling a bit heavy, a big bite of the cabbage salad clears your palate right up.

The golbaengi noodles paired really well with the fried dishes, so I'd definitely recommend ordering it if you're going with a group. It's not too spicy — just the right amount of spicy-tangy that pretty much anyone would enjoy.

Maybe because I usually like leaner cuts like sirloin or chicken breast, I felt like the sirloin cutlet was even tastier?

Honestly, that day I'd been craving gukbap (rice and soup) with kkakdugi, but we ended up here by majority vote. And then — we found gukbap-style kkakdugi here anyway!

Maybe because I ate nothing but heavy food all day, writing this post now, I'm craving that golbaengi noodle again...

The chicken cutlet went so well with both the curry and the tartar sauce — total comfort food.

One of my sisters couldn't even finish a single dish on her own, so we ended up with more leftovers than expected — packed up the parts we hadn't touched to take home.

Is Gyewondang Ingye Branch worth it for a group?

Beyond the fried menu, Gyewondang Ingye Branch also serves steak platters, hot pot rice bowls, and butter chicken curry, so it's a great pick when you're eating with people who have different tastes. If you're after a good-value lunch or dinner, give Gyewondang in Ingye-dong a try!
