Gunpo pork cutlet spot with no break time for a 3pm solo meal: Onjeong

In short

Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang Sanbon Academy District Branch is a handmade Western-style pork cutlet restaurant that opened right in front of the main gate of Gwangjeong Elementary School in Sanbon, Gunpo. Visiting alone at 3pm, the writer ordered the cheese soba set and the spicy soba set, and each came with mushroom soup, morning bread, green citron salad and rice — enough food that one set alone was hard to finish. Because Onjeong has no break time, it is a solo-dining spot in Sanbon where you can get freshly fried cutlets even at an odd hour.

Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang Sanbon Academy District Branch is a Sanbon, Gunpo favorite that makes everything from the sauce to the cutlets fresh every day. The meat is aged 12 hours for tenderness, and the pork cutlets (donkkaseu) are fried crisp in clean oil using a Suyu-style fryer. It's right in front of Gwangjeong Elementary School's main gate, making it a great spot for solo dining in the Sanbon academy district.

A new restaurant opened right in front of Gwangjeong Elementary's gate. It's called Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang, a pork cutlet specialist.

There are four kinds of pork cutlet: classic, cheddar cheese, spicy, and curry. They all looked so good I had a hard time choosing. Well, it's near my place anyway, so if it's good I can just come back!!!

Why solo diners fill Onjeong's Sanbon academy district branch even at 3pm

The inside of Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang Sanbon Academy District Branch had mostly 2-seat and 4-seat tables and was spotless since it just opened. Lots of people were eating alone here too. With no break time, you can get a freshly fried cutlet any time. I went around 3pm, and about four more groups came in after me.

The ₩1,500 set upgrade: cheese soba set vs spicy soba set

The menu is broadly divided into pork cutlets, soba (buckwheat noodles), and udon. There are four cutlet types — classic, spicy, cheese, and curry — and there are also set menus combining cutlet with noodles. Adding just ₩1,500 to a main turns it into a set, so I ordered the cheese soba and spicy soba.

The spicy soba set came out first. For reference, the cutlet-only order comes with two pieces. But even one piece was a lot for me.

Cheese soba set with cheddar cheese on top of the cutlet

The cheese soba set arrived. Doesn't it look neat?!? Uniquely, this dish has cheddar cheese melted on top of the cutlet. I love anything with cheese, so I enjoyed it a lot. It also came with mushroom soup, morning bread, green citron salad, and rice. The portions were really generous.

They also gave wasabi for the soba and strawberry jam for the morning bread. The staff running the place looked quite young but were very friendly.

And so, a full table of this Sanbon, Gunpo favorite was laid out. It's great that a place this generous and good value opened up near my home.

The soup seemed to be homemade too. It was really good dipped with the morning bread.

The soba included in the set menu wasn't a mini portion — it looked like nearly a full serving. With green citron mixed in, it was refreshing and delicious. The portion was so big it was a challenge for one woman to finish a set alone. I recommend this for value-for-money dining in Sanbon.

How spicy is Onjeong's spicy pork cutlet? About Shin Ramyun level

Onjeong's cheese cutlet had that sweet-and-salty charm, and the spicy cutlet wasn't very spicy at first, but the more I ate, the more that delicious heat lingered. It's about Shin Ramyun spicy — not a super hot cutlet. Just the right amount of delicious spice. Personally, I wish they'd offer a half-spicy, half-cheese cutlet. The two flavors really went well together.

Cabbage salad topped with green citron sauce

The green citron sauce also seemed homemade, tasting different from what I've had at other gyeongyangsik restaurants — fresh and bright. I never knew cabbage salad could taste this good. Salad and rice can be refilled at the self-serve bar!

The cutlets are on the thinner side and very crispy. They didn't go soggy even after time passed. The frying oil seemed clean too, since the color was a golden hue. The meat was tender, and being Korean pork, it was really tasty. Even though I went at an odd time past lunch hour (around 3pm), there were still plenty of people eating lunch alone in Sanbon.

Why Onjeong fries its cutlets in a Suyu-style fryer

I wondered why the frying was so crispy and clean, and it turned out they use a Suyu-style fryer. This type of fryer uses both oil and water together, letting sediment settle into the water layer so the oil stays clean much longer. It's harder to maintain, but the food tastes much better. Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang clearly puts thought into making tasty, healthy food. Tasting it, the frying really was different. Sanbon, Gunpo favorite, confirmed.

Is Onjeong a good solo-dining spot near Gwangjeong Elementary?

The portion was really huge, but it was so good I finished it all haha. Next time I'll come back and try the classic cutlet too. That's my introduction to Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang, a Sanbon, Gunpo favorite. It's great for solo dining, and with no break time, you can get a freshly fried, crispy cutlet any time. If you're looking for a restaurant near Gwangjeong Elementary School, I recommend it!!
