Sokcho bakery café snacks for the drive to Seoul: Bultan Gamja Bread

In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. On the drive back to Seoul we took away a box of four squid-ink potato breads, blackened and baked, for 10,000 won and a 1,000-won squid-flavored jjondeugi (chewy rice snack), then rationed them over three days at home and still wanted more. There was no time for the moostoy figure-painting experience, but the large free car park, friendly service and clean restrooms made Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread a happy last stop.

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread packaging brought home

It's been three days since I got back from my Sokcho trip, and even after rationing it out until yesterday, I still miss the taste. A perfect snack for all ages, and a thoughtful gift too since it's made with carefully chosen ingredients that don't wreck your health while still tasting great. Let me introduce Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread, a Sokcho bakery café favorite^^

Where is Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store, and what are the parking and hours?

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is located at 34-20 Haksapyeong-gil, 1st floor, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do (1028 Nohak-dong, Sokcho-si). There's a spacious free parking lot, and it's open Mon–Sun 9:00–18:00, with holiday hours of 9:00–17:00 (including Liberation Day and substitute holidays).

1. Cute wood-fired oven (agungi) shape, unforgettable taste

The moment you walk in, the visuals catch your eye — they bring back memories of blackened potatoes roasted in an old-fashioned agungi (traditional wood-burning stove). They're not actually burnt black; the shop uses squid ink to achieve that dark color in a healthy way, capturing Sokcho's identity. The rustic-yet-trendy look was really interesting.

But most of all, the addictive, unforgettable flavor! The potato bread, baked fresh that day with domestic potatoes, was delicious without being too sweet or salty. Even as a picky mom, I could feed it to my kids without worry. The potato bread I generously brought home is already gone, and I'm so sad about it that I'm going to order more online.

2. What goes into the potato bread?

What moved me most was the carefully selected ingredients. The outer coating is dusted with ground black sesame, black beans, and black rice powder, which really boosts the nutty flavor.

What impressed me most was that, instead of simply steaming or boiling the main ingredient — Gangwon-do potatoes — they bake them in the oven every morning and peel them while still hot to make the filling, maximizing the potatoes' natural sweetness. With no synthetic additives at all, the shelf life is short, but that's exactly why they make and sell everything same-day, for the sake of healthier food — a perfect, reliable snack for the family. You can find detailed info on the brand's Smart Store page.

3. Chewy and addictive: the squid-flavored jjondeugi

Take a big bite and the outside is chewy like injeolmi (sweet rice cake), while the inside is filled with soft, fluffy potato filling. Since the sweetness comes from cream cheese and butter rather than artificial sweeteners, it suits adult palates too, and at 10,000 won for a box of 4 with 10% off for 3+ boxes, it made for a guilt-free gift^^

And here I stumbled onto an unexpected life-changing snack. I picked up the squid-flavored jjondeugi sold individually for 1,000 won without much expectation, and once I tried it, I couldn't stop.

They apparently make it in three flavors highlighting Sokcho's local specialties — snow crab, squid, and dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) — and the distinctive umami and chewiness of the squid one kept my hands moving. 'Ugh, I should've gotten the 12-piece set for 10,000 won!' I keep regretting. It's not too sweet, not too salty, just delicious, so you keep reaching for more without any guilt^^;;

4. Inside the spacious café and the moostoy painting experience

There's a spacious area where you can relax with a variety of drinks — coffee, ades, and teas — making it a great spot to rest during your trip.

Spacious café seating for enjoying drinks

In one corner of the café, there's also a ceramic art toy experience called 'moostoy' (10,000 won), a collaboration between CF director Kim Hak-hyun and Pororo designer Choi Sang-hyun — perfect for making special memories with kids or a partner.

Since I stopped by on the way back to Seoul just to grab snacks, I didn't have time for the experience, and I'm sorry I missed it. After seeing only franchise cafés, it felt refreshing to visit a café full of the owner's personal touch and care, and I wanted to keep lingering in that cozy atmosphere.

5. Is Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread worth a stop on the way home?

Beyond the eye-catching space and delicious desserts, what really rounded out the good mood to the end was the friendly service and spotless restroom. Every staff member was kind, and the restroom was clean. From the moment I walked in, I felt the coziness of home, and even as I was leaving, the clean restroom kept that impression going — I stayed wrapped in good memories both during my time at the café and later at home while eating the dessert^^
