Ochan Hoedong is a fermented Korean-course restaurant at 661 Gangnam-ro, Gangsang-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, 1st floor. It's open Mon-Fri 11:30-20:00 (weekday break 15:00-17:30) and Sat-Sun 11:00-20:00, closed every Thursday. Parking is available right in front of the store.

I visited Ochan Hoedong, a well-known hanjeongsik (Korean course meal) restaurant in Yangpyeong, for a refined and deep meal. It sits along the road that follows the Namhan River, making it a great stop for a drive just outside Seoul.
What kind of restaurant is Ochan Hoedong?

This place serves calm, composed Korean food built from eco-friendly ingredients grown on local Yangpyeong farms, plus traditional fermented vinegars aged over years, and house-made liquor and sauces.
Is parking easy at Ochan Hoedong?

There's a generous private parking lot in front of the Ochan Hoedong building, so it's easy to drive there. It's a great spot to stop for a meal in the middle of a Namhan River drive.
Inside Ochan Hoedong: dining room and private rooms

Stepping through the door, calm air and quiet music drift in. It feels separated from the outside world, and the ceramic tableware set at each table gives a neat, old-fashioned impression.
Besides the regular hall tables, there are private room areas for independent dining. Sliding doors with a hanok-style quietness let you have private time.
This space is a group room good for family occasions like a formal meeting between two families' parents.
A table seating up to 12 anchors the center, and the tidy mood makes it easy to have a calm conversation.

Objects on the table enhance the space's mood, and weighty ceramic bowls and cups are neatly set, giving a sense of being treated with honor.
On one side of the hall, ceramic tableware and containers are displayed. If you like a piece, it's set up for individual purchase.
It's fun to slowly browse the bowls with their varied textures.
You can also see the house-fermented vinegars, soy brine, sesame oil, and makgeolli that Ochan Hoedong makes by hand. These are the actual ingredients used in the course dishes, and you can also order a small glass to try during the meal.
How many courses does Ochan Hoedong offer?

Ochan Hoedong runs three course lineups so guests can choose according to the occasion and budget. The range spans from a royal-cuisine course to a formal banquet course, and specific ingredients may change with seasonal produce.

The owner has completed traditional liquor sommelier training, so it's also a great place to try pairings of dishes with a variety of traditional liquors, including house-brewed makgeolli.

Most of the vegetables on the table are eco-friendly produce sourced through cooperation with local Yangpyeong farms. This is a Yangpyeong hanjeongsik restaurant that shows off Chef Kim Myeong-hee's principle and care in preparing over 95% of ingredients as eco-friendly.
The signature Ochan Hoedong course: three welcome dishes
On this visit I ordered the signature 'Ochan Hoedong' course. After sipping a cup of cold tea to cleanse the palate, the composed course began.
First up are three welcome dishes to whet the appetite.

The 'Today's Field Salad from Yangpyeong' shows off leafy freshness at first glance, cut into easy bite-size pieces. Instead of sharp acidity, a light, gentle dressing brings out the vegetables' freshness. The gim-bugak (crispy seasoned seaweed) is crunchy yet oil-free, melting softly with the sweet umami distinctive to gim (seaweed).
A seasonal porridge made by grinding and simmering pumpkin, chestnut and peanuts has a soft base with a subtle graininess. Without any artificial sweetness, the ingredients' natural sweetness spreads through the mouth, wrapped in nuttiness. It warms and settles the stomach.
Yangpyeong mushroom japchae with 3-year rosemary vinegar
Next comes a warm stir-fried 'Yangpyeong mixed mushroom japchae (glass noodle stir-fry)', served alongside a separate '3-year aged rosemary vinegar'.
The japchae's glass noodles aren't soggy — warm and soft. The shiitake mushrooms mixed in have a chewy texture and release moist juices that enrich the flavor.
The arugula garnish paired with the japchae better than expected, and a touch of chili heat cleaned up the finish nicely, giving good balance.

The rosemary vinegar, fermented and aged for three years in an onggi (earthenware jar), has no sharp acetic smell — instead round acidity and a subtle sweetness. A refreshing yet soft rosemary aroma spreads and cleanses the palate.

Acorn jelly in mustard sauce and chilled sesame jelly with fermented vinegar
Next up, served chilled, are 'fermented vinegar acorn jelly with mustard sauce' and a sesame jelly cold dish.

The sesame jelly is lightly dried to give it a chewy, springy texture.

Hanwoo tteokgalbi glazed with heirloom soy sauce
For the meat course, 'soy-brined Hanwoo tteokgalbi (short rib patty)' is served.

Eggplant and zucchini are grilled alongside, their moisture soaking in among the rich aroma of Hanwoo beef. The rounded but weighty salinity of the long-aged soy brine amplifies the umami.
Eating the tteokgalbi with the vegetables, it's cut into a size that's easy to eat in one bite, letting you enjoy it cleanly — a detail that reflects the chef's care.
10-year-aged doenjang stew with white lotus leaf rice
Closing out the meal are the '10-year aged doenjang stew (fermented soybean paste stew)' and 'lotus leaf rice'.
The doenjang stew is made with soybean paste fermented for 10 years, and the moment the earthenware pot lid is lifted, concentrated savoriness spreads out. Rather than the sharp saltiness or thin, watery broth of store-bought paste, it has a soft umami and faint acidity shaped by long fermentation, completing a flavor unique to this restaurant.
The moment you open the lotus leaf rice, a deep lotus leaf aroma rises.

A subtle scent like a forest after rain is soaked into the rice grains, giving a clean flavor.

The four neatly seasoned side dishes aren't overly salty, so they harmonize with the doenjang stew and lotus rice rather than overpowering them.
Dessert: 3-year strawberry vinegar and tangerine gwajeul
Dessert is a 3-year aged house-made strawberry vinegar and tangerine-flavored gwajeul (Korean rice puff sweet).
The strawberry vinegar has no sharp acidity — you get the natural fragrance of fresh strawberries as they are. There's no visible strawberry, yet it tastes closest to real strawberry, which was a fresh experience.
The airy tangerine gwajeul doesn't stick to your teeth, delivering a chewy yet crisp texture.

Which occasions is Ochan Hoedong in Yangpyeong best for?
