Cheonho Station gukbap set for two with extra rice: Boseung Hoegwan

In short

Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean soup with rice) restaurant right in front of Exit 3 of Cheonho Station in Gangdong, Seoul. Sitting in the sofa seats with her child, the writer ordered the set meal for two plus an extra bowl of rice, which brought suyuk gukbap (boiled pork soup with rice), naejang gukbap (pork offal soup with rice) and boiled pork jowl, and the napa cabbage kimchi came with free refills. The pork jowl was tender enough that the child cleared a whole bowl of rice, making Boseung Hoegwan an easy pick for a family meal out.

A chilly day calls for gukbap with the family

The second the weather turns chilly, all I can think about is gukbap 🥘 I've fallen hard for it lately — sundae gukbap, naejang gukbap, pork gukbap — and that season is finally here 🐷 I thought of Boseung Hoegwan, a well-known gukbap spot near Cheonho Station, so our whole family headed out 🚗

📍 Boseung Hoegwan is on the ground floor of the building you see the Lotteria in, straight ahead from Cheonho Station Exit 3. It's in such a good spot — easy to find and easy to get to. Inside, it's clean and tidy, so it was great to bring my kid. We sat in the sofa seats, which were comfy for her too. There are also separate seats for solo diners, so it'd be a good option even for people who find eating alone tricky 🍚

Single dish or set meal: what to order at Boseung Hoegwan

The menu at Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch includes bossam gukbap, sundae gukbap, naejang gukbap, and even ppyeo haejangguk (pork bone hangover soup). Some people can't eat sundae gukbap, so it's nice there's a ppyeo haejangguk option too — good for groups with different tastes.

Since we had our kid with us, we debated between ordering three a la carte dishes or two set meals with extra rice. In the end we went with the set meals so we could also try the bossam — two set meals plus extra rice 🍚

The basic side dishes at Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch are napa cabbage kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), and chives ✌🏻 A gukbap place lives or dies by its kimchi, and this kimchi is genuinely delicious 👍🏻

The napa cabbage kimchi was just spicy enough, perfectly seasoned, not too fermented and not too fresh — exactly the state I love — so we finished it and asked for a refill. It was completely my style. If they sold it separately, I'd want to buy some to take home.

The kkakdugi was also just fermented enough, and topping the gukbap with it cuts through any richness while boosting your appetite 🌶️ With napa cabbage kimchi and kkakdugi this good — both essential to gukbap — the soup couldn't possibly be bad.

The pork jowl suyuk that made our child finish a whole bowl of rice

The pork jowl bossam (steamed pork) comes out on a hot plate so you can keep it simmering as you eat 🫧 It arrives with bossam, chives, and sundae (Korean blood sausage).

The pork jowl bossam was so good that our son said the meat was so tender and tasty that he polished off a whole bowl of rice. He usually eats slowly and waits for mom and dad to finish, but here he finished his rice and was waiting on us for once. Being made from pork jowl, it had just the right amount of fat and was soft enough to chew easily — clearly a hit with a kid's palate too.

Dadaegi chili paste: ask for it in or out

A full spread of gukbap on the table 🍴 I had the bossam gukbap, my husband had the naejang gukbap. You can choose to add or skip the dadegi (chili paste) when you order. Since I can't handle spicy food, I ordered mine without it; my husband kept his regular 🍴

Since the bossam keeps simmering on the plate, you can enjoy it hot right to the last bite. Our kid gave the pork jowl bossam nonstop praise 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hot plate of pork jowl bossam kept warm until the last bite

Such a delicious bossam gukbap. The bossam set comes with sundae, and I ordered the bossam gukbap because the meat was so tender and satisfying — totally worth it 👏🏻

Broth and meat in the suyuk gukbap

The bossam gukbap at Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch had a milky, rich broth loaded with tender bossam meat. There was so much bossam that meat remained until the very last bite, making the combination of rice, meat, and broth absolutely top-tier 👍🏻

The broth, simmered for a long time, had that rich milky flavor down perfectly, with zero gamey smell and a deep, savory taste I loved. The seasoning was spot-on, so I didn't add anything, but if you find it needs more, the shrimp jeotgal (salted shrimp) they provide would work great.

The meat in the bossam gukbap was so tender — not the least bit chewy, soft and moist — that both kids and adults could enjoy it without any trouble. A spoonful of bossam gukbap topped with kimchi is pure honey 🍯

The naejang gukbap my husband ordered

The naejang gukbap (offal soup) had a generous amount of offal too — very satisfying. Loading it up with perilla powder, dadegi, and plenty of chives brought out the offal's flavor even more.

Unlike the mostly lean-meat bossam gukbap, the naejang gukbap was fun to eat for its variety of textures — chewy gopchang (intestines), springy osorigamutu (pork stomach), and more, each part different. The more you chewed, the more you got that rich, savory offal flavor, but with absolutely no gamey smell. It makes me so happy that a gukbap restaurant this hearty exists.
