Second morning in Mokpo: where to eat with a child

On the second morning of our Mokpo trip, we slept in leisurely and left the hotel to grab brunch.
Traveling with a kid, taste matters when picking a restaurant, but so does whether there's something the kid can eat without fuss.
Mokpo usually brings to mind octopus or seafood dishes, but since our kid isn't great with seafood yet, we looked for somewhere we could all enjoy brunch.
Among a few options, we settled on udon — supposedly famous in Mokpo — at the birthday kid's request.
Udon-i Wanseongdoeda Mokpo Peace Plaza Branch: location, parking and waiting
Most of the hot spots in Mokpo seemed to be around Peace Plaza. We started our itinerary at Udon-i Wanseongdoeda Mokpo Peace Plaza Branch, about a 10-minute drive from the National Marine Heritage Research Institute, which we planned to visit next.

There's parking for about one car in front, but it seems more comfortable to park at the nearby Lotte Mart or a public parking lot.

Since it's a Mokpo favorite that comes up when searching for kid-friendly spots, there seems to be a long wait after lunchtime.

We went for weekend brunch, or an early lunch, around 11am and got in with no wait!

The exterior gave off the vibe of a restaurant you'd see in Nagoya, Japan.

House-made noodles and fresh flowers inside Udon-i Wanseongdoeda

The first thing that caught my eye walking in was the noodle-making happening right there. An udon shop that hand-pulls its noodles — instant trust boost before even tasting anything.
The interior had a calm wood-tone feel. Walking in, the same yellow and deep wood tones as the exterior stood out first.
The lighting was soft, giving an overall calm atmosphere, with a courtyard-like feel that set it apart from a typical bunsik joint or casual udon shop — it felt upscale.
We'd actually called ahead to ask about opening and made a reservation, so we got seated nicely like this. What stood out was fresh flowers on every table, and the water was cold barley tea, which felt like another cut above.
The menu: hot udon, cold udon, gyudon and tendon

Each table has a tablet for ordering, which was perfect since our kid, who's into menus lately, could browse the photos with us.

From hot udon to cold udon to various sides — browsing the tablet, the range of udon was bigger than I expected.

There was a wide range: warm broth udon, cold bukkake-style udon, and even creative cream-sauce udon.
The regular printed menu was also made really elegantly — the design itself seemed to reflect a philosophy about udon. It felt like the craftsmanship you sense on a Japan trip, so I looked more closely at it. The ebiten kake (₩11,900) and clam udon (₩12,900) had me curious too.

Our kid wanted to try the curry udon (₩10,900) and the mentaiko ankake (₩12,900) too — honestly, just as the kid said, there was so much that looked delicious, it was a happy dilemma.

The three of us tried to pick one hot udon, one cold udon, and something new to try, but even then—

—they even had gyudon and tendon, so our rice-loving kid agonized over it for quite a while. Ordering took longer than expected.
What we ordered at Udon-i Wanseongdoeda and what it cost

- Toomba cream udon (₩13,900)
- Niku udon (₩10,900)
- Salmon bukkake udon (₩14,900)
- Karaage, small (₩4,900)

The care put into the noodles and water for every single bowl of udon, plus pretty plating — it put me in a good mood before I even took a bite!

Niku udon, 10,900 won: the birthday child's pick
The niku udon our kid picked is a hearty udon with warm broth, chewy noodles, and a generous helping of meat.
Pop the egg yolk and wrap it up with the meat and thinly sliced scallions—so good!

Light enough for breakfast but perfectly balanced in carbs, protein, and fat. Really filling and delicious!

Salmon bukkake udon, 14,900 won, with green citrus
My personal favorite — the salmon bukkake udon (₩14,900). It's the broth-less, cold bukkake style topped with fresh salmon.

They served it with tangy green citrus, and it felt like Jeju, no wait, Japan, no wait — Mokpo.

The tanginess of the green citrus, the soft umami of the salmon, and the springy udon noodles!

I have to say it was genuinely a beautiful bowl of udon — how did the noodles get this springy, chewy, and slurpable all at once?
I've been to Udon Kaden in Hapjeong-Yeonhui too, but this place feels even more full of care.
Take the salmon with grated daikon oroshi, scallions, and the wasabi that came alongside — wow! And sipping the sweet-and-sour broth on the side genuinely melted away all the stress.

Toomba cream udon, 13,900 won
A totally different taste from a regular broth udon and also completely different from Tuscan cream pasta — it's somewhere between Korean and Western.
Rich broth with butter, spicy chili flakes, and plenty of bacon and mushrooms. Topped with something like grana padano cheese for a creamy, spicy taste!
Karaage (small), 4,900 won
A good crispy chicken side for when udon alone feels a bit light. They're apparently known for fried dishes here too, so the tendon is worth trying as well!
Was Udon-i Wanseongdoeda worth it as a birthday meal?

Our kid rated it the best meal of the whole Mokpo trip, and honestly, we saw a lot of families with kids there too. There were baby chairs, and the wide table spacing looked stroller-friendly.
From non-spicy cream udon to meat udon to cold bukkake udon, it was great that everyone could pick according to their own taste.
Udon-i Wanseongdoeda, a favorite near Peace Plaza, left us with a delicious memory of our Mokpo trip!
