Jeju rice cake shop for pumpkin baekseolgi after Hallasan: Suragan

In short

Suragan Tteokbang is a takeout-only rice cake shop on Noyeon-ro in Jeju City, about 15 minutes by bus from Jeju International Airport. Coming down from Hallasan, the writer bought a 1,500-won pumpkin baekseolgi (steamed rice cake) and ate it on the spot, then carried a 20-piece omegi-tteok set home on the plane with an ice pack, unboxed it at midnight and froze it. The set holds five flavors — red bean, black sesame, tangerine, nuts and injeolmi — four pieces each, and after 2–3 hours of thawing at room temperature it makes a Jeju souvenir that suits every age.

Omegi-tteok (millet rice cake) is one of the classic Jeju travel souvenirs!! I used to buy it at Dongmun Market on past trips, but I heard there's a rice cake shop near the Jeju provincial office with a great reputation, so I went to check it out.

Where is Suragan Tteokbang, and is there parking? 15 minutes by bus from Jeju airport

Suragan Tteokbang!! It's located about 15 minutes by bus from Jeju International Airport. Perfect to pick up on your way back after finishing your Jeju trip. By taxi it would probably run about the base fare, haha.

There's no separate parking lot, but judging by the cars in front of the shop, brief stopping seems possible.

Inside Suragan Tteokbang: a takeout-only rice cake shop

Suragan Tteokbang is a takeout specialist, so the rice cakes on display are simply arranged, and there's a rice cake workshop in the back, haha.

What else does Suragan Tteokbang sell besides omegi-tteok?

Suragan Tteokbang sells a variety of rice cakes besides omegi-tteok too. Chapssaltteok (sweet rice cake), pumpkin baekseolgi (steamed rice cake), yaksik (sweet rice with nuts), and angeumjeolpyeon (bean-filled rice cake).

Castella injeolmi (soybean-coated rice cake), jeolpyeon (patterned rice cake), and wang-dutteok (large red bean rice cake).

Baram-tteok (wind rice cake) and yaksik! Baram-tteok looks so pretty, haha. They also have injeolmi-tteok, the most popular rice cake around, haha.

Potato songpyeon, mini dutteok, long jeolpyeon and even garaetteok (cylindrical rice cake) — you can pick whatever suits your taste.

They have yakgwa (honey cookie) too, lol.

Since it's a rice cake shop, they seem to get a lot of orders for thank-you gifts. They have all kinds of packing boxes prepared for different piece counts.

The 1,500-won pumpkin baekseolgi eaten right after hiking down Hallasan

I bought the 20-piece omegi-tteok set and a pumpkin baekseolgi!! The pumpkin baekseolgi is ₩1,500 each, and the combination of well-ripened pumpkin with not-too-sweet baekseolgi was such a perfect match that, hungry from hiking Hallasan, I demolished it on the spot, lol.

Unboxing the omegi-tteok carried on the plane, and how to store it

Omegi-tteok absolutely must be frozen the same day you receive it! So I bought it before boarding the plane, and the moment I got home I unboxed it and sent it straight into the freezer~~!!

The 5 flavors of omegi-tteok were neatly packed, 4 pieces each. Suragan Tteokbang's storage instructions for omegi-tteok: freeze it as soon as you receive it! Of course, it's best eaten that same day, haha. You shouldn't freeze the whole box together — freeze each piece individually. When eating, they say it's tastiest if you let it thaw naturally for about 2 hours until soft, or cut it in half and microwave it for 20–30 seconds.

Mini ice pack included in the box

There was even a mini ice pack included, so it made it safely home via my own self-delivery on the plane, haha.

I took it out and photographed it before putting it in the freezer, haha. All 5 flavors of omegi-tteok, 4 pieces each, evenly packed in.

Suragan Tteokbang's 20-piece, 5-flavor omegi-tteok set

I really, really wanted to eat it, lol, but by the time I got home and laid it all out it was already midnight, so I saved it for tomorrow and put it straight in the freezer, haha.

Tasting all 5 omegi-tteok flavors: red bean, black sesame, tangerine, nuts and injeolmi

Omegi-tteok cut in half after natural thawing

It felt like a waste to eat it alone, so I went to my mom's place and opened it up, lol. I didn't microwave it separately — I let it thaw naturally for 2–3 hours until it was fully soft, then cut it in half, and it had thawed just right.

Chewiness that comes right through the photo

Red bean omegi-tteok, the true identity of omegi-tteok~~!! A mugwort rice cake generously coated in savory whole red bean topping. However they cook the red bean, it was so soft and savory that it was the best red bean omegi-tteok I've ever had, haha. The red bean filling wasn't too sweet and had a clean flavor, so my mom loved it too, haha.

Black sesame omegi-tteok and tangerine omegi-tteok! The black sesame one was unique in that the base wasn't mugwort rice cake but maybe hallabong (Jeju citrus) rice cake — it had a refreshing tang, lol. The tangerine omegi-tteok was literally tangerine rice cake, lol. Just hearing about it, you'd wonder what it would even taste like, but the rice cake and fruit went together so well, it was genuinely delicious!

The nut omegi-tteok and injeolmi omegi-tteok are the classic flavors that no one could dislike — basic mugwort omegi-tteok coated with nuts or injeolmi powder!! Since the basic omegi-tteok is already so good, you can just pick nuts or injeolmi based on your preference, haha.

There are all kinds of souvenirs in Jeju, but I think omegi-tteok might be the most fundamental item that people of all ages, men and women alike, would enjoy. Older folks especially love it, so highly recommend!! I'll keep the rest frozen and eat one at a time as breakfast, lol.
