Yongridan-gil tteokbokki restaurant with butter garlic fries, Yongsan
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is an instant tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cake) restaurant on Yongridan-gil in Yongsan, Seoul, with a reputation dating back to its street-cart days in front of the old Yongsan Station. On a weekday evening, this visit covered two servings of medium-spice instant tteokbokki with extra ramen noodles, the new butter garlic fries at 7,000 won, and self-made fried rice to finish. Hyeonseonine's instant tteokbokki already comes with plenty of chewy jjolmyeon noodles, so it is better to see the portion before adding more noodles.

What kind of place is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch?
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is an instant tteokbokki and bunsik (Korean street food) restaurant right on Hangang-daero 39-gil in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, smack in the middle of Yongridan-gil. It's open daily from 11:00 to 24:00 with no closed days, and both takeout and delivery are available. There's a high chair, but no parking.
Today I want to share a review of a legendary tteokbokki spot whose fame goes all the way back to its old street cart days in front of the old Yongsan Station — Hyeonseonine Yongsan branch. This is my real weekday evening visit report, enjoying both nostalgic flavor and trendy new menu items right in the middle of the hot Yongridan-gil area. Let's get into it!

Anyone who loves tteokbokki has probably heard of Hyeonseonine at least once. It built its reputation by word of mouth back in the days of the street cart in front of the old Yongsan Station, and it's grown into a genuine tteokbokki institution at its current location.

Most people come for the set menu with tteokbokki, fritters, sundae (Korean blood sausage), and gimbap (seaweed rice roll) together, but the instant tteokbokki you cook yourself at the table is just as much of a treat, if not more!

Even though I visited on a weekday evening, the place was lively, full of people casually unwinding after work with a beer or soju alongside their tteokbokki.

Ordering by kiosk, the self-serve bar and induction tables
At Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, you order easily yourself through the kiosk as soon as you arrive.

There's a self-serve bar next to the kiosk where you grab your own pickled radish, small plates, and apron — and you're all set!

If you order the instant tteokbokki, note that you'll be seated at a dedicated table with its own built-in induction burner.

Medium-spice instant tteokbokki for two: are extra ramen noodles needed?
Hyeonseonine Yongsan's instant tteokbokki comes in mild, medium, or spicy, and we went with medium — not too spicy, not too plain.

We added ramen noodles to the two-serving instant tteokbokki, but it turned out chewy wheat noodles (jjolmyeon sari) were already included in a pretty generous amount! If you're a huge noodle lover it won't matter, but the base portion is already plenty, so keep that in mind.

Butter garlic fries at 7,000 won: how big is the portion?
It had been a while since my last visit, and I spotted an eye-catching new item — butter garlic fries, something no one can pass up!

It's ₩7,000, and I was pleasantly surprised by how generous the portion was — way more than I expected. It's enough to leave leftovers for two people, so if you're visiting as a group of 3–4, I'd definitely recommend ordering it as a side. The sweet-salty butter garlic sauce was drizzled on thick, making it the perfect sweet-and-spicy pairing to alternate with the spicy tteokbokki.
Right as the butter garlic fries started feeling a bit rich, the tteokbokki finished cooking! The chewy rice cakes and fish cakes mixed with the appetite-grabbing spicy-savory sauce were genuinely delicious.

One bite in and I completely understood why so many tables were pairing it with a casual drink in the evening — it's an addictive flavor.

Finishing with self-made fried rice
After polishing off the tteokbokki, you can't skip Korea's eternal dessert — fried rice, right?

We ordered the fried rice menu, which is fun because you fry it yourself right at the table.

As the leftover spicy-sweet sauce in the pot mixed with the rice, seaweed flakes, and a generous drizzle of nutty sesame oil, the aroma spread everywhere — a perfect way to close out the meal.

If the tteokbokki earlier was all spicy-sweet charm, the fried rice rounded things off cleanly with its nutty flavor — a truly satisfying way to end the meal.
Final thoughts on Hyeonseonine Yongsan
I got to enjoy a nostalgic taste from the old street cart days along with delicious instant tteokbokki and side dishes right in the middle of trendy Yongridan-gil, and left completely full. If you're looking for a Yongridan-gil spot to enjoy a full course of spicy-sweet instant tteokbokki, hearty butter garlic fries, and nutty fried rice, definitely stop by Hyeonseonine Yongsan branch!
