Hwangnidang-gil takeout mochi eaten a day later in Gyeongju: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a takeout-only fruit mochi shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. Arriving at 6:30pm, 30 minutes before the 7pm close, peach and mango yogurt were already sold out, so the four flavors left — fresh chocolate, fig, pineapple and gold kiwi — went home and were eaten a day later, and fig was the top pick. Tareudang has no seating at all, but the mochi are worth one stop on a Hwangnidang-gil walk.

Today I'm introducing Tareudang on Hwangnidang-gil!! With a name like that you'd think they only sell tarts, but surprisingly(?) it's more famous for fruit mochi. Sadly, Tareudang is a takeout-only shop, so it's not really a café you can sit and rest in. T_T
Where is Tareudang, and what are its hours and parking?
Tareudang is at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, on Hwangnidang-gil. Hours are daily 11:00–19:00, with early closing once ingredients run out, and it's open year-round.
- Feature: made and sold same-day
- Parking: no dedicated lot (nearby Hwangnam or Daereungwon public parking recommended)
Anyway, I arrived around 6:30, right before closing!! Maybe because the weather was pleasantly cool, the sky was so pretty. Thanks to the pretty sky, the shop looked even cozier, which put me in a good mood~

Strawberry and mandarin mochi are winter-only at Tareudang
When I went, Tareudang's strawberry mochi and mandarin mochi weren't available because they're seasonal T_T.. Strawberry and mandarin seem to only be around in winter?

I'll attach a photo of the menu board that was up when I visited. But since this place mainly uses fruit, the seasonal menu seems to change often.. If you're planning to go, better call the shop and check ahead~~
Tareudang's review event: cooler bag and gift box
They're also running a review event, and it's not mochi or tarts but they give you a cooler bag and a pretty gift box!

What was still left at Tareudang at 6:30pm?
Well.. no strawberry or mandarin was a bummer, but there was no time to be sad — I immediately bought every flavor I could still get haha. Interestingly, the displayed menu was a bit different from the menu board. The display only listed fresh chocolate, peach yogurt, mango yogurt, fig, pineapple, and gold kiwi.

Turns out, maybe because I went a bit late, peach yogurt and mango yogurt were sold out. I really wanted to try the Dubai-style fresh chocolate mochi too!! T_T
Anyway I said give me everything that's left, so I bought fresh chocolate, fig, pineapple, and gold kiwi!

Hanji wrapping and how big each mochi is
I didn't eat them right when I got home.. I ate them a day later. They're wrapped in something like hanji (traditional Korean paper), which makes them easy to eat on the go. Every mochi was about fist-sized, but oddly the fresh chocolate one was more like a baby's fist size?

I was surprised at how much bigger it was than I expected! Nice, nice haha.
Tasting Tareudang's four fruit mochi flavors a day later

Pineapple mochi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It had several pineapple pieces cut into nice bite-sized chunks. It also had the most whipped cream, making it the largest of the four. The surprisingly deep red bean flavor paired well with the pineapple, which I found interesting. Though since pineapple is a juicy fruit, there were a few spots where the mochi skin had gone soft, which was a bit disappointing.. T_T
Fig mochi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As someone trying fig for the first time, I was pretty shocked. It was way more to my taste than expected. Sweeter than I thought, and the ripeness level had a satisfying chew with no off notes — I loved it. My boyfriend, who ate it with me, said really good figs are even sweeter than this, but I was plenty satisfied!

Fresh chocolate mochi ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The only mochi with no fruit in it. The filling was firmer than expected, which threw me off. The flavor of the filling itself wasn't bad at all, but since a mochi makes you expect a soft, chewy, dense texture, the firm, butter-like texture was a letdown.. This one will probably just come down to personal taste. People who like it will probably really like it. Still, the chocolate flavor was rich so it went down fine haha.
Gold kiwi mochi ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not as sweet compared to the other fruits. I think the lower rating is partly because I'm just not a big kiwi fan to begin with. The fact that the pineapple and fig I'd just eaten were relatively tastier probably played a role too? Objectively it wasn't bad, but I didn't feel like the fruit used was especially delicious for the price.. the value for the price just felt a bit lacking.
Top pick: fig for me, pineapple for my boyfriend
So~~ my top pick is~~ drumroll please~~ fig 🍈!!! My boyfriend's top pick was pineapple 🍍!!!
Honestly, fruit mochi is basically made from ingredients that can't really taste bad, so overall it wasn't a fail. Anyway, if you want to try some unique fruit mochi, it's a Hwangnidang-gil dessert spot worth visiting once, just for the experience.
