Braised hairtail in Seongsan, Jeju: why a Naver booking matters even on weekdays

On the last day of my Jeju trip, I went out to explore around Seongsan! Just like the rule of eating black pork once a day in Jeju, you've got to eat hairtail once a day too, right? Let me introduce Jejurowoon, the braised hairtail restaurant I visited in Seongsan, Jeju.

Before heading to Jejurowoon, I made a Naver reservation ahead of time! I went on a weekday afternoon, and thanks to the reservation I walked straight in — there were so many people that there was actually a wait forming! If you're planning to visit, I strongly recommend making a Naver reservation first!!

Finding the yellow building, open from 8 AM

Here's the exterior and hours of Jejurowoon, the braised hairtail spot in Seongsan, Jeju! It's painted bright yellow so it wasn't hard to find at all. The hours run from 8 AM to 9 PM, so you can drop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner — really convenient.

Here's the interior of Jejurowoon! There were tons of tables, and just as many customers!! On a weekday with this many people, that's basically proof it's a good spot, right? I was already excited before we'd even started eating.

What comes with the Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon A set?

Here's the menu at Jejurowoon! There were four set menus total, plus a stir-fry (duruchigi) option for people who aren't into fish. We ordered the A set! It came with braised hairtail (galchi-jorim), grilled tilefish, glutinous rice in a stone pot, soy crab, and a choice between seafood hot pot or sea urchin seaweed soup. We went with the sea urchin seaweed soup.

The A set we ordered at Jejurowoon! Completely packed table! For around ₩20,000-something per person, isn't that great value?!

How were the side dishes and the soy-marinated crab?

The basic side dishes set out at Jejurowoon! The seasoned crab (yangnyeom-gejang) wasn't too salty and had no fishy taste, so it went great with rice. Besides that, the corn salad, stir-fried fish cake, and dressed chives were all seasoned just right — I enjoyed everything haha.

One whole grilled tilefish per person

And the grilled tilefish! You get a whole fish per person, so the portion was really generous! I was surprised by the size too, and since it came freshly grilled and piping hot, it tasted even better haha. The flesh was completely tender.

Dining with kids? Choose the sea urchin seaweed soup

You could choose between seafood hot pot and sea urchin seaweed soup, and here's the sea urchin seaweed soup we picked. The portion was generous, and since it came in a stone pot it stayed hot until the last spoonful. The seasoning was light, and with sea urchin roe simmered in, the soup was refreshing and clean-tasting — really delicious! There were a lot of families with kids there, and I thought the sea urchin seaweed soup would be a great pick for anyone bringing children. Recommended!

The biggest braised hairtail we ate in Jeju

The star of Jejurowoon — the braised hairtail (galchi-jorim)!!

Pot of braised hairtail at Jejurowoon

What surprised me was that this was the biggest hairtail I've had in any braised hairtail dish across Jeju!! It also came loaded with plenty of radish alongside the fish haha.

Braised hairtail sauce loaded with radish

The plump hairtail flesh was great eaten plain or with rice, and the sauce itself was so good it was a total rice-thief. There was plenty of the broth-sauce too, so I scooped in a generous amount and mixed it with my rice.

Finishing with pot rice and sungnyung (toasted rice tea)

The rice at Jejurowoon comes as glutinous rice cooked in a stone pot!!

After scooping out and eating the rice, we finished by making sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) from the pot. The scorched rice layer was really well done, so the sungnyung came out wonderfully nutty — the perfect last dessert for a Korean meal lol.

Coffee enjoyed after the meal

After finishing the meal at Jejurowoon, we wrapped up with coffee lol. The owner was so kind, and with reasonable prices and a great set composition, Jejurowoon really is a braised hairtail restaurant worth visiting in Seongsan, Jeju! If you're looking for a good restaurant in Seongsan, or a great braised hairtail spot in Jeju, I recommend Jejurowoon.
