I was tired and had been in a low mood for a few days, so... to the meat!!! I kept chanting that we absolutely had to eat meat on Saturday, and that's how we ended up at Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화) in Songnidan-gil 🔥🥩 It's exactly halfway between Seokchon Station and Jamsil, and within walking distance of Seokchon Lake, so the access alone was really good.

It's at 1F, 17 Songpa-daero 48-gil, Songpa-gu, Seoul, open daily 11:00–02:00 with last order at 01:10. On weekdays there's a break time from 15:00 to 17:00.

Private charcoal grill tables and the atmosphere

The moment we walked in, the interior had me in awe 👀 It's super clean and sleek, and every table has a charcoal grill built right in, so each seat felt like its own private room✨ Red line lighting runs along the ceiling molding, and there's even a flame-shaped art wall, so it doesn't feel like just any barbecue place — it's upscale and formal, the kind of place that would work for bringing older relatives, for group gatherings, and for dates too. That flame-shaped art wall especially makes the name 'Seonghwa' (torch flame) feel well earned🔥

Seonghwa is actually listed in the Michelin Guide!! There are 3 private rooms too, so it looked great for company dinners or get-togethers, and the upscale feel carried through. The rooms are numbered 1, 2 and 3, and each one has its own coat hanger rack inside, so you can sit back comfortably without worrying about your jacket.

Glass-walled aging fridge and ordering the Seonghwa set

Near the entrance there's a glass-walled aging fridge, so as you walk past you can see whole cuts of hanwoo dripping with marbling — very Instagram-worthy📸 Looking closely at the labels, they showed grade 1++, domestic origin, a weight of 12.7kg and even the traceability number, which gave me the sense that everything is properly managed and kept fresh🐮 It's a visual focal point and also builds trust with customers!

Every table has a tablet ordering system (t'order), which was convenient, and the menu descriptions were thorough so we could browse and choose at our own pace 😂 The set menus ranged from the Seonghwa set (400g, ₩99,900) up to the Special Day set (400g, ₩176,000), and among the 1++ premium selected cuts, the Seonghwa sirloin (HIT🌟 ₩38,000) and the salchisal / chuck flap tail (BEST👑 ₩64,000) stood out — but the Seonghwa set seemed to be the signature, so we ordered that first haha. The Seonghwa set includes sirloin + wine-marinated rib finger meat, and since wine-marinated beef isn't something you see often, I was excited!! 🍷 Sadly the saeu-sal (rib eye cap) and the snowflake sirloin were sold out🥲 Reserve the popular cuts in advance.

Free side dish refills and the whisky bar

The banchan (side dish) setup 🤩 Finely shredded scallion salad, ssam (wrap) greens like myeongi-namul (pickled wild garlic leaves), crunchy pickled radish, shredded beef in a light broth — a bit of everything came out, plus a four-sauce plate of salt, sesame salt, wasabi and whole-grain mustard🧂 Dipping each bite into a different one was already plenty of fun, and every dish was in matching ceramic-look tableware so the plating was a treat to look at too🍽️ Best of all, my beloved myeongi-namul and all the other sides can be reordered through the tablet once you finish them (free), so no struggling to flag down a server — such a plus!!

When I glanced over at the bar, the whisky lineup was no joke — Yamazaki 12 and 18, Hakushu, Macallan 18, Royal Salute 25, Kavalan Solist — a selection that could rival most whisky bars🥃 I heard the place is also certified in Suntory's Highball Masters 100 for 2026, so the highball pairings are probably better than you'd expect!! I'm on antibiotics right now so I couldn't drink a highball, and that was such a shame,,,

The order for grilling wine-marinated rib finger meat and sirloin

A staff member came over, set the grill on the charcoal, and kindly walked us through which cut to grill first and in what order — we were right on the brink of meat going on🔥 Just the smoky aroma drifting up ahead of time had my expectations exploding.

From the moment the meat hit the grill I was in full concentration mode🔥 The piece piled with minced garlic was the wine-marinated rib finger meat, there were two button mushrooms each with a knob of butter tucked in, and one smooth white chunk — that was beef fat! Once the grill is hot you rub this fat over it before laying down the meat so nothing sticks and the smoky flavor soaks in much deeper, they said🔥

Watching the marbled cuts brown on the fat-slicked charcoal grill, my mouth was about to water uncontrollably🤤 And the taste of the meat, what can I even say... the sirloin melted in my mouth, and I think I said 'this is so good' about 50 times while eating hahaha. It was my first meal of the day, which made it even better, and the butter-soaked mushrooms burst with flavor — that butter + mushroom juice combo was delicious.

While the meat cooked I had a look around the bar next to us, and below the whisky shelf there was a Stella Artois draft beer tower set up separately that I hadn't noticed earlier🍺 Ugh, why can't I drink right now... ㅠ ㅠ

Dessert, finished with a free Excellent ice cream bar

To finish, dessert was mochiri tofu (silky mochi-textured tofu) + an Excellent ice cream bar. The Excellent is a complimentary dessert — does anyone else remember the nostalgic Excellent...? As a kid I loved the blue one so much, and it was the precious ice cream I was only allowed one of per day hahaha. It was the perfect palate cleanser, and after meat + an extra bowl of rice + dessert for the two of us, I was still full by dinnertime.

But the real twist came from a framed photo near the counter😳 It was a signed photo, and when I looked closer, chef André Rush had visited! Yes, the former White House chef who served four US presidents from Clinton to Trump, the muscle chef who's appeared on Korean variety shows several times💪 He'd even left a handwritten 'Thank You', and since my boyfriend subscribes to his YouTube channel, it felt oddly nice to see.

A Songnidan-gil spot that would work as a date course or a company dinner venue — and if anyone's looking for an upscale blind-date place where you can eat great meat, I fully recommend this one😍
