Monday night Korean BBQ in Myeongdong, ₩50,000 for two: Yuktongnyeong

In short

Yuktongnyeong Myeongdong Main Branch is an omija-aged black pork grill house in an alley 217m from Myeongdong Station Exit 5 in Jung-gu, Seoul. Arriving at 7:30pm on a Monday with 7 parties ahead meant a 15-minute wait, and one serving each of black pork neck and pork belly plus water naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon (cold noodles) came to 50,000 won for two. The staff grill every piece at the table, and the warm broth served with the bibim naengmyeon is the detail worth coming back for.

I was near Myeongdong and craving good meat, so I went to Yuktongnyeong. Honestly, since it's such a touristy area, I wasn't expecting much from the grilled meat. But wow — seeing foreigners enjoying Korean black pork this much actually made me weirdly proud.

If you're looking for a black pork spot in Myeongdong, hopefully this review helps.

From Myeongdong Station Exit 5, walk straight toward Shinsegae Department Store and turn into the alley between the CU and the Ediya Coffee — you'll find it quickly. There's no dedicated parking lot though, so you'll need a paid parking lot around Myeongdong. Parking fees around here add up, so I'd recommend just taking the subway!

How long is the wait on a Monday evening?

I got there just after 7:30pm on a Monday and there were 7 parties ahead of me. But since they seat two-tops and four-tops separately, tables turned over faster than I expected. I only waited about 15 minutes.

HBAF store in Myeongdong visited while waiting

There's an HBAF store nearby, so I browsed and bought some almonds, and by the time I came out it was exactly time to be seated. If you have a wait, I'd recommend killing time there.

The lighting is on the dimmer side, so it has real atmosphere for a barbecue place. It's even a huge success story of a restaurant that uses the entire building, first floor through third.

The walls were covered in celebrity autographs and Blue Ribbon certificates, and with several four-top tables the turnover is pretty quick. I saw a lot of foreign tourists too.

What side dishes and sauces come with the meat?

Banchan spread with six different sauces at Yuktongnyeong

The banchan (side dishes) won me over right away. There were six different dipping sauces alone — salted shrimp, salt, wasabi, salted hairtail guts — plus scallion salad, mixed greens, wild garlic leaves, garlic scapes, aged kimchi, and pickled cucumbers.

Pickled garlic scapes, aged kimchi, and other basic side dishes

I wasn't expecting much given the Myeongdong location, but it out-did most other barbecue places I've been to. The pickled garlic scapes and aged kimchi were especially good.

Black pork neck and belly, grilled by the staff

Above all, true to the name Yuktongnyeong ('meat president'), the grilling is flawless. A foreign staff member grilled it for us, and it was by far the best grilling skill I've seen at any barbecue place recently. If I were running a meat restaurant, I'd want to pay extra to poach them.

Once everything was cooked, they even had the sense to plate the neck and belly on separate dishes.

The pork belly was so clearly black pork you could see the hair pattern on the skin, and the skin was so chewy it was shockingly good. The neck was just as delicious — honestly I couldn't pick a winner between the two.

A piece of black pork dipped in salt and salted hairtail guts

For me, dipping it in salt or salted hairtail guts was the best way to eat it.

Bibim naengmyeon served with a bowl of broth

Dongchimi water naengmyeon ordered as a finishing dish

The finishing naengmyeon (cold noodles) was insane too. I cleansed my palate with the dongchimi water naengmyeon first, and since I'm a bibim (spicy mixed) person, I went for the bibim naengmyeon.

Broth poured into the bibim naengmyeon

Unless you're at a dedicated naengmyeon restaurant, I've never seen a place serve broth alongside bibim naengmyeon. But here they do... adding a little broth into the bibim noodles was pure bliss.

50,000 won for two: is Yuktongnyeong worth it?

After all that, the total came to ₩50,000. If you want to properly eat black pork in Myeongdong, you have to go to Yuktongnyeong! Also highly recommended if you're taking a foreign friend along!
