Yeonnam-dong bakery tortilla bread as a full lunch, ₩17,800: Mandong

So today I finally made it to Mandong Jegwa, which is famous as one of the Yeonnam-dong bakeries / Hongdae go-to spots. Mandong Jegwa is such a well-known Yeonnam-dong bakery that I bet a lot of you already know it, but for anyone curious, here's my review 🤗

Where is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, and what are its hours?

📍 Location 32 Yeonhui-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul 🚇 About 466m from Hongik University Station Exit 3, roughly a 5-minute walk ⏰ Hours Daily 11:00–21:00

It's on the way if you're walking from Hongik University Station toward Yeonnam-dong, so the accessibility was pretty good.

The vibe of the shop is a bit old-school like the name suggests, but there's a classy feel to it too. Their slogan is "We will bake the best bread in Korea." You can see the determination haha.

Mandong Jegwa is takeout only — so where do you eat the bread?

Mandong Jegwa is a takeout-only shop, so there's no spot to eat inside the store itself. But apparently if you buy your bread and head to the Ediya Coffee right next door, you can sit and eat there as long as you order one drink per person. There's no parking available either, so keep that in mind ‼️

Through that slightly open window, the warm, savory smell of bread was drifting out.

Inside Mandong Jegwa: the shop and the bread selection

The store was clean overall and had a nice atmosphere for browsing and taking your time to choose. All kinds of bread were lined up on the shelves, so the moment I walked in I was already stuck on what to pick 👀 my inner bread-lover was going wild 🥹 There were way more varieties than I expected, so a place where you go in planning to buy just one thing and end up with an armful haha.

From garlic baguettes to bagels, ciabatta, pretzels, and meal breads, there was enough variety to pick based on your taste. Mandong Jegwa is especially famous for its garlic baguette as the signature item. Besides the garlic baguette, they also had things like cappuccino bread, basil tomato bread, and onion bagels.

The moment I walked in, a staff member kept handing me samples — like three different kinds of bread. Honestly every single one was so good I wanted to grab them all.

🥨 Cheese pretzel

The cheese pretzel had a salty, savory flavor that made it a great snack. The plain bread flavor plus the cheese richness — I feel like this would go really well with coffee.

🌿 Mugwort rice cake bread (ssuktteok-ssuktteok)

This was one of the items I'd personally been curious about. It had that distinct mugwort aroma and a chewy texture that I found really appealing. If you like desserts with mugwort or rice cake in them, this one would suit your taste.

🍠 Sweet potato bread

The sweet potato bread had that classic sweet, cozy sweet-potato flavor — easy to eat. If you like sweet breads, this is a safe, tasty pick.

🍕 Tortilla bread, a full lunch in one bun

I bought the tortilla bread meaning to have it for lunch, and it's kind of like a pizza bread. It had meat, onion, and cheese inside, so it really did taste like eating pizza — I enjoyed it so much. I wondered if one bread would be enough to fill me up, but after eating this I was genuinely stuffed. It was more filling and had more volume than I expected 👏

What 4 breads cost at Mandong Jegwa: 17,800 won

With my breads in hand, off to the register. I also love the packaging — it's simple, just says "Mandong Jegwa," but it gives off a more upscale feel.

I bought 4 kinds of bread and the total came to ₩17,800. I think I made the right call coming to Mandong Jegwa instead of a franchise bakery. The price is similar to other bakeries, but it really has that handmade, delicious bread feel.

When should you visit Mandong Jegwa for the widest bread selection?

I popped in quickly during lunchtime, and going on a weekday lunch definitely meant there was a much wider variety of bread and it was great. I actually visited here on a weekend evening about 3 months ago, and back then all the popular, tasty breads were already sold out, so there wasn't much to choose from. If you're going for the popular, delicious breads, I recommend a weekday lunch. If you're going on the weekend, you'll probably need to get there early ‼️

I brought everything back and had the tortilla bread with Yonsei Science Dangbaek tea at the office (trying to be a bit healthy by pairing it with the tea, but it went so well with the bread).
