Yeonnam-dong bakery garlic baguette chilled two days: Mandong Jegwa

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a neighborhood bakery on Yeonhui-ro in Yeonnam-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, whose signature is a garlic baguette generously soaked in garlic sauce. On a weekday evening at 7:40pm the visit brought home the garlic baguette, garlic bread, an onion cream bagel and maple bread, and the leftover garlic baguette was kept in the fridge and eaten cold over two days, by which point the sauce had thickened and tasted even better. If you like moist, sweet garlic bread, Mandong Jegwa is worth the stop.

I went to Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, a bakery in Yeonnam-dong! Personally I prefer neighborhood bakeries with their own personality over franchise bakeries.

This is already my Nth visit! Mandong Jegwa has such a variety of breads, and every time I go there's something new I want to try, so whenever I'm in Yeonnam-dong I naturally end up stopping by. The signature garlic baguette especially is something I keep wanting to eat again~ This time I visited on a weekday evening around 7:40pm.

What's still on the shelves at Mandong Jegwa at 7:40pm on a weekday?

I arrived at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch around 7:40pm on a weekday, and thankfully a good variety of breads were still left~ Even though it was late, there was quite a lot to choose from.

Luckily the garlic baguette and chestnut bread I really wanted were still there, haha

If you go to Mandong Jegwa late, a lot of the bread selection can be gone,

so if you want to browse a wide variety, I'd recommend visiting a bit earlier.

Four kinds of bread picked at Mandong Jegwa

This time I picked garlic baguette, garlic bread, onion cream bagel, and maple bread.

What does the garlic baguette at Mandong Jegwa taste like?

Since I was at Mandong Jegwa, the signature garlic baguette was a must, of course.

The garlic baguette is a bit different from the typical crunchy garlic bread you might picture. Garlic sauce soaks generously between the layers of bread, so the inside is really moist. The garlic flavor isn't too sharp or overpowering — instead it's a rich, sweet, savory garlic sauce taste that keeps you reaching for more.

Day two in the fridge: is the garlic baguette good eaten cold?

What I love about the garlic baguette is that with so much sauce, the bread never feels dry — it stays moist. And the portion is bigger than you'd expect! We couldn't finish it in one sitting, so we refrigerated the leftovers and ate it over two days. I worried the flavor would drop off after a day, but surprisingly, not at all. Even taken straight out of the fridge and eaten cold, it was still delicious. Actually, eating it cold made the garlic sauce feel a bit thicker and more fudgy — I quite liked that version too.

The onion cream bagel wasn't originally something I planned to buy, but the staff at Mandong Jegwa gave me a taste, and I bought it right after, haha. One bite in, the bagel's chewy texture paired really well with the soft onion cream. The cream wasn't just sweet — it had that distinct onion flavor and a nutty richness, so it didn't feel heavy even after a few bites. I guess tasting samples always ends up adding one more unplanned bread to the bag. I gave the onion cream bagel and garlic bread to my parents-in-law, and hearing they enjoyed them made me happy too.

Maple bread and coffee from Mandong Jegwa

Lastly, the maple bread was my husband's pick! He wanted a sweet bread with a cup of coffee, so we grabbed that. True to its name, it had a sweet maple flavor that went really well with a clean Americano. It felt like a totally different kind of dessert bread compared to the garlic baguette, so if you're buying several items, adding one sweet option like this makes for a nice combo. My husband enjoyed it with his coffee too — satisfied :)

Who will like this Yeonnam-dong bakery?

Every time I visit, I notice Mandong Jegwa leans more toward moist, saucy, cream-heavy breads with bold flavor rather than plain, simple styles. So if you usually prefer plain bread over rich flavors, it might not be for everyone, but I personally love this style of neighborhood bakery and often find myself craving it.

Franchise bakeries are convenient and familiar, which is nice too, but personally I prefer bakeries like this one that have their own signature items and give you the fun of discovering something new each time. That's why I keep coming back to Mandong Jegwa whenever I'm in Yeonnam-dong.

If you're looking for a neighborhood-bakery vibe in Yeonnam-dong, or you love moist, sweet garlic bread, Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is well worth a stop.
