Hongdae Seoul restaurant with astragalus-burdock broth gomtang: Anok

In short

Anok is a gomtang (Korean bone soup) and Pyeongyang naengmyeon restaurant at 13-4 Hongikro in Mapo, Seoul, recently opened behind a traditional hanok facade in the middle of Hongdae. The writer ordered Anok's three signature dishes — Pyeongyang naengmyeon (water) at 14,000 won, clear pork gomtang at 13,000 won and pork tail jjim at 29,000 won — with kimchi, kkakdugi and gungchae on the side. The clear broth, deepened with astragalus root (hwanggi) and burdock, plus the collagen-rich pork tail bones, made Anok well worth the trip.

Signature photo of Anok, a Korean restaurant in Hongdae

I had plans near Hongdae, so I found myself there for the first time in ages — haha, feeling like the old auntie among all the young energy. While figuring out what to eat for dinner in this youthful part of town, I found a newly opened place serving Korean classics like gomtang and Pyeongyang naengmyeon: Anok, a Hongdae gomtang spot.

A hanok facade in the middle of Hongdae: what Anok looks like inside

Anok's traditional hanok exterior full of character

The exterior alone made me go "whoa!!" the moment I saw it. Never expected such an elegant, traditional hanok building to be sitting right in the middle of Hongdae..!!

The entrance to Anok, recognizable even without the sign

The facade fits the name "Anok" (안옥) so well that I knew it was the place before I even saw the sign. With such a striking look from the outside, I think foreign visitors would love this Hongdae spot too.

Anok's building, rich with Korean tradition

A building that carries Korean tradition, and a menu full of Korean dishes that pretty much anyone would enjoy.

Anok's wooden floor, evoking a traditional Korean house

The place is charming enough as a restaurant, but honestly I think it could run as guesthouse and still do great business. Like a traditional house you'd only see on TV. Made me want to sit on the wooden floor with a cup of coffee — it's been a while since a building alone made me say "whoa."

What to order from the Anok menu

Fitting the hanok vibe, Anok serves Korean food, and it's a Hongdae gomtang spot at heart. Since it was my first visit, I decided to just order the three signature dishes. When in doubt, order the signature menu.

The price of a full table: naengmyeon, clear gomtang and pork tail jjim

What I ordered at Anok: Pyeongyang naengmyeon (water) for ₩14,000, clear pork gomtang for ₩13,000, and pork tail jjim for ₩29,000.

  • ✔️Pyeongyang naengmyeon (water): ₩14,000
  • ✔️Clear pork gomtang: ₩13,000
  • ✔️Pork tail jjim: ₩29,000

Anok sets the table full and generous. I really thought I wasn't that hungry before coming, but suddenly I was starving and ready to eat!

Three side dishes: kimchi, kkakdugi, and gungchae

The side dishes were totally my style too — kimchi, kkakdugi, and gungchae. If you love pairing gungchae with pork gomtang, that's me 🙋🏻‍♀️

Is the collagen-rich pork tail jjim worth 29,000 won?

The pork tail bone jjim coated in red sauce — this one you absolutely must order. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended. The collagen on the outside is no joke, the chewy collagen-rich pork skin is amazing, and even the meat around the bone is completely tender. The combo of the clear, rich gomtang, the clean and refreshing Pyeongyang naengmyeon, and the red-sauced pork tail jjim is pure art.

How Anok's Pyeongyang naengmyeon tastes

If you're looking for a Pyeongyang naengmyeon spot in Hongdae, give Anok's a try! The broth is very clear and clean, yet somehow rich flavor comes through from within that clean broth, along with a refreshing finish — that's Anok, a Hongdae naengmyeon restaurant worth seeking out.

Clear pork gomtang with deep flavor and no gaminess

Gomtang lovers, run to Anok right now 🏃🏻‍♀️. I really love guk-bap (soup with rice), so I had high hopes for the pork gomtang, and — deep broth, zero gaminess, and the tender meat on top, ahh. Add gungchae on the side and it's pure art.

No gaminess, clean and deep flavor — the kind of taste that would suit basically anyone, and I especially think foreign visitors to Korea would love it here. The interior is full of hanok charm and tradition, and the food suits international palates well too, making Anok a Hongdae spot I'd recommend as part of a travel itinerary.

Why Anok's astragalus and burdock broth tastes so good

A bowl of Anok's clear broth simmered with medicinal herbs

I kept wondering why both the gomtang broth and the naengmyeon broth tasted this good, and it turns out Anok's broth is deepened with carefully selected medicinal herbs like hwanggi (astragalus root) and burdock, leaving only the clear, pure essence of Korean native pork — easy on the stomach down to the very last drop.

Filling up on hearty meat, and filling up further with a broth that's clean, gentle on the stomach, and deeply flavorful — that's Anok, a Hongdae guk-bap restaurant. The interior, the food, the taste — everything about this Hongdae spot left me thoroughly satisfied.
