What kind of place is Deodeo Ganjanggejang in Wondang, Goyang?

Today I visited Deodeo Ganjanggejang Muhalliripil, an all-you-can-eat soy crab place in Goyang. Personally, I think a weathered sign like this — rather than a shiny new one — is a sign of a good restaurant.

Right next to it hung a big banner announcing the arrival of autumn crab. I'm guessing since the fishing ban just lifted and harvesting is in full swing, they're using the crab caught right now.

Saturday 5pm wait and parking at Deodeo Ganjanggejang
I visited around 5pm on a Saturday and there were about 5 parties waiting. It took about 25 minutes to get seated, so figure roughly 5 minutes per party.

There was a separate lounge-like waiting area — I bet they light a wood stove there in winter.

The parking lot is quite spacious too, so unless the wait really piles up, parking shouldn't be a problem.

And there's a cute rabbit hopping around the parking lot — the kids loved it.

The interior was pretty spacious too, and seeing it stay packed like this made me expect the crab must be turning over constantly, staying fresh.

All-you-can-eat or the set menu: which to order?
The menu has both all-you-can-eat and a set that comes with one crab, but since it's only ₩10,000 more for unlimited refills, pretty much everyone seemed to be ordering all-you-can-eat. I did too, and I thought about having a drink, but I was too busy eating crab to find the time to order haha.

Next to the table was a guide on how to handle the claw meat. What was a little unusual — unlike other all-you-can-eat crab places — was that there was no mention anywhere of a time limit or a requirement to finish all the leg meat, and in practice there really wasn't one. But having that guide posted still made me feel obligated, out of conscience I guess, to dig into the claw meat properly. Though honestly, since there's no time limit, there's no need to rush, so I could pick it apart slowly, which was really nice.

How does the soy crab at Deodeo taste?
Tasting just the soy sauce from the first plate of soy crab, it's fairly salty with a subtle hint of medicinal herbs.

So I worried that taste might come through when eating the crab too, but once I actually tried the crab meat, none of that came through at all — it was delicious. The meat was plump with no fishy taste, a really good soy crab. Honestly, the most important thing at an all-you-can-eat place is whether the refill crab quality differs, and that was my biggest worry before visiting since I'd heard a lot of complaints about refill crab being fishy elsewhere. But to cut to the conclusion: the quality was identical to the first crab I ate. I'll introduce the marinated crab and crab stew, then show you the refill photos below.

What comes with it: crab stew, spicy marinated crab and steamed egg
The crab stew that came with it wasn't the sharp, spicy-refreshing type but leaned more toward a doenjang (soybean paste) soup flavor — a milder crab stew overall. They give you instant noodles to add, but I think it'd taste even better with rice cooked into it as porridge instead.

They also served marinated crab, side dishes, and flying fish roe — and even the roe is refillable! The marinated crab had that sweet-and-spicy flavor like the side dish you get at Korean BBQ places. At first I thought it might be too spicy, but the sweet-spicy balance made it go down easily.

Eating it with rice like this, it's basically a rice thief.

Egg custard comes out too, and a spoonful when things get spicy really neutralizes the heat nicely. Egg custard refills are ₩2,000, worth keeping in mind.

Is the refill crab as good as the first plate?
For our first refill, not knowing what the quality would be like, I asked for just one crab. They serve the crab together with the shell, and honestly this one was even tastier than the first crab. I'd also worried whether we were being treated better because it was a sponsored visit, but it was just served from the same big stainless steel tub that goes around to every table for refills.

As you can see, both the size and the quality were identical to the first plate.

Piling the crab guts on top of the rice and topping it with crab meat is a privilege you can really only get away with at an all-you-can-eat place — I was so happy.

The marinated crab was smaller than the soy crab from the start, so its refill quality was identical too. It was so good that between the two of us we ate maybe ten-plus crabs — seriously a lot. When I checked my weight the next day, it had gone up 2 kilos from the sodium haha.
Deodeo Ganjanggejang soy crab all-you-can-eat: the verdict
I think the four most important things at an all-you-can-eat soy crab restaurant are: first, the quality of the crab; second, the quality of the refill crab; third, the time you're allowed to eat; and fourth, the conditions on refilling crab.
- Quality of the crab
- Quality of the refill crab
- Time allowed to eat
- Conditions on refilling crab
Deodeo Ganjanggejang Muhalliripil satisfied every one of these. No time limit, no refill conditions, and the soy crab that comes out is delicious to begin with — but the refill crab was the exact same quality. If you're looking for an all-you-can-eat soy crab restaurant, this is one I'd recommend with confidence.
