Sottture Dakdoritang's signature chicken stew bubbling in a cauldron lid

If you're looking for a good restaurant in Seongjeong-dong, Cheonan, I have to introduce a real gem today. It's "Sottture Dakdoritang," a Cheonan restaurant that simmers chicken stew in a bubbling cauldron lid — spicy, savory broth, tender chicken, and a finishing fried rice that rounds out the whole course perfectly. I couldn't not write about it.

Where is Sottture Dakdoritang in Cheonan?

Sottture Dakdoritang sits tucked into an alley at 31 Seobu 19-gil, Seongjeong-dong, in Seobuk-gu, Cheonan. The signage and exterior catch your eye right away. Even on a weekday lunch, customers were already streaming in and out, which got my expectations up.

I stumbled on it while searching for good food in Seongjeong-dong, Cheonan, and just from the outside it had that restaurant-worth-visiting vibe. Right at the entrance there's a big cauldron on display. Sottture Dakdoritang gives a ₩5,000 discount on lunch takeout, so I'd recommend it for anyone planning to pack it to go.

Parking at Sottture Dakdoritang

Parking is personally the thing I stress about most when visiting a restaurant, but Sottture Dakdoritang has a spacious lot right behind the store, so there was zero stress finding a spot. Turnover seemed fast during lunch, so there was plenty of room left, and since Seongjeong-dong tends to have a lot of narrow alleys, being able to visit without worrying about parking is a big plus!

Inside Sottture: side dishes and the self-serve bar

The inside of Sottture Dakdoritang is much roomier than expected, with generous spacing between tables. Since it was a weekday lunch, there were groups of what looked like office workers scattered around, and the soft lighting made the atmosphere cozy. Even on a weekday lunch, the place was packed.

What side dishes come with the chicken stew?

The banchan (side dish) spread is solid too — pickled radish, seasoned danmuji (pickled radish), and other salty little sides that went great alongside the chicken stew.

Self-serve bar: water, plates and extra broth

There's a self-serve bar where you grab your own water, plates, and utensils. Lunch hour must be hectic, but the self-serve corner was kept neat and clean, which made me feel the shop takes hygiene seriously.

What two people ordered at Sottture

The menu centers on dakdoritang (chicken stew) with various sizing options, plus add-on sari (extra ingredients) and fried rice listed as well. Prices are reasonably split by headcount, so it's easy to order for lunch without much financial burden. There were two of us, so we ordered a whole chicken stew and a rolled omelet.

Whole chicken dakdoritang, from rice cakes to drumsticks

And finally, the main event! Just the sight of the dakdoritang bubbling away in the cauldron lid got my mouth watering. Chunky potatoes and big pieces of chicken soaked deep in spicy sauce — it looked delicious just sitting there. They said to simmer it another 5 minutes before eating. I couldn't resist and tasted the sauce before it even fully boiled — it was seriously good.

The rolled omelet came out huge too — this is a portion you could finish without leftovers if there were three or more of you.

You're supposed to eat the rice cake first — it cooked quickly and turned out really chewy. With the dakdoritang sauce soaked in, it was genuinely delicious. Honestly, a standalone tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) made with this sauce would be amazing too.

One bite of the drumstick and there was a gentle sweetness underneath the spice, with the chicken tender rather than dry. Sottture Dakdoritang apparently receives fresh chicken deliveries every morning — maybe that's why there was zero gamey smell, just pure deliciousness.

The chicken was deeply seasoned with umami, so my chopsticks kept going back for more. The broth wasn't thick — it stayed subtly clean, so it didn't get tiring and was easy to enjoy all the way through, and the slight sweetness rising up after the spice gave it a balanced flavor rather than a purely aggressive kick. It thickens as it simmers, so if you like it thick, just keep boiling; if you prefer it thinner, add more broth from the self-serve bar.

Dipping the rolled omelet into the dakdoritang sauce made it even better!

The chicken had a nice variety of textures depending on the cut — the drumstick meat was chewy with juices intact, and the breast portion wasn't dry either, cooked moist and well.

Self-cooked fried rice for two with mashed potato

As we were finishing off the dakdoritang, we ordered self-cooked fried rice for two! The sauce was too good to skip the fried rice. Even if you're full, I recommend ordering the fried rice no matter what — it's seriously delicious.

You adjust the amount of leftover sauce to the right level, add rice and gim (seaweed) flakes, then press and stir with a spatula to fry it up. Cooking it yourself so the sauce soaks in evenly made it taste even better, somehow.

We mashed up the leftover potato and mixed it right into the fried rice. Maybe because of the potato, it tasted even better.

We ate every last bite. Even full, it was so good it kept going down. If you're craving chicken stew in Cheonan, I really recommend Sottture Dakdoritang.
