Hi everyone, this is Hyegeung, resident carnivore. I went back to Dwaeji Gongbang, an Okgil-dong favorite, for frozen samgyeopsal (pork belly) after a while. That taste of frozen pork belly I'd forgotten about — so good. 🥴
Inside Dwaeji Gongbang: every table full on a weekday

Dwaeji Gongbang, a real Okgil-dong favorite that fills up even on weekdays... I waited about 10 minutes to get in. It goes for a modern retro interior but the tables are spaced generously, so it felt comfortable. Big windows too, nice natural airflow.
They set a small extra table next to the basic round table, which turned out really handy.
This is a photo from when I was leaving after eating — genuinely packed nonstop. A truly popular spot in Okgil-dong.
What's on the Dwaeji Gongbang menu: Iberico and Korean pork

The main draw at this Okgil-dong favorite is Iberico pork, but they also have Korean pork, so you can eat meat out for a relatively good price. Since frozen samgyeopsal was the new item, I went with that, haha.
What comes free: soft tofu stew and the self-serve pickled chili peppers

Everyone praises Dwaeji Gongbang not just for the meat but for the banchan (side dishes) too — have you heard? I'm a huge fan of pickled gochujang radish myself, and it doesn't look like much, but eaten with the meat it was really, truly good.

They even sell the pickled radish in the restaurant, so eat as much as you can from the self-serve bar, haha.
Tofu stew also came as a default. Same story — rich, savory, and delicious. The basic table setting is so solid that you don't need to order any sides; ordering just the meat was satisfying and never got boring.
Korean pork frozen samgyeopsal, 180g for 14,000 won
Honestly... I came to eat Iberico... but they said frozen samgyeopsal was the new menu item! After some deliberation, I ordered the frozen samgyeopsal. 170g for 14,000 won — good value too.
Being Korean pork, the color of the meat was impressive. With cartilage still attached, you can tell it's a delicious cut of frozen belly. The fat ratio was just right too, and it came pre-scored before grilling even started.
The slightly retro interior suits frozen samgyeopsal even better. People usually sprinkle pepper on frozen belly — apparently that was originally to mask any smell from older-style frozen pork — but Dwaeji Gongbang's frozen belly is good enough quality that it doesn't smell, so you don't really need the pepper, haha.

Cooks fast, which is nice — Dwaeji Gongbang's frozen pork belly. Being Korean pork, it really was delicious.

With Dwaeji Gongbang's signature pickled gochujang radish — the perfect side for frozen samgyeopsal.

Wild garlic leaves and salted hairtail sauce go really well with it too.

And I think the true flavor of frozen samgyeopsal comes out when you eat it with plain white rice... dip it in ssamjang and eat with white rice, and the sweetness of the rice meets the crisp, sizzling fat of the belly in the best way...
Thick-cut Iberico pork neck, 170g for 17,000 won

I quickly polished off the pork belly and was about to order another portion of that... but then thought I'd regret it if I left without trying the Iberico pork neck, which was my original reason for coming. So I ordered it after all.

Even as a single portion, the chunk was decently sized — satisfying. Pork neck is easy to grill too.

Iberico pork neck loaded with fat really does have that beef-like color. Personally, I think this is best eaten plain, without dipping in anything.

But sometimes a bit of wasabi hits the spot too — the richness pairs well with it, haha.

Thanks to the tofu stew, we ate really well without needing to add any sides. The place stayed full the whole time until we left — delicious, friendly, nothing lacking, so of course it would be.
If you're looking for a good pork restaurant in Bucheon's Okgil-dong, give Dwaeji Gongbang a try.
