Songpa Korean BBQ restaurant for Shrek Galbi: Yukmong

In short

Yukmong Bangi Direct Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Bangi-dong, Songpa, Seoul, where staff grill the meat tableside. I had galbi samgyeopsal, limited Shrek Galbi, galmaegisal, and brisket ramen with my mom and sibling. Verdict: a comfortable choice for a family meal or an easygoing group gathering.

In the evening, the three of us—my mom, my sibling, and I—visited Yukmong Bangi Direct Branch in Bangi-dong’s food alley. There are so many Korean BBQ places in Bangi-dong that choosing one was hard, but this time we wanted somewhere with a nice atmosphere where the staff grill the meat themselves, so we could eat comfortably. It also seemed like a good option for anyone looking for a company-dinner spot near Seokchon Lake or a good restaurant in Bangi-dong.

What was the atmosphere like at Yukmong Bangi Direct Branch?

The restaurant was larger than I expected, and its tidy exterior made it easy to find even on a first visit. Once inside, it was not just loud and bustling like a typical Korean BBQ restaurant; the soft lighting and orderly atmosphere made a good first impression.

The tables were comfortably spaced apart, and I heard there is also a private space downstairs, so it looked suitable for family gatherings or company dinners. If you are looking for a Korean BBQ company-dinner spot near Seokchon Lake, meat quality matters, of course, but you also look at the atmosphere and seating layout. In that respect, Yukmong was an easy place to recommend for gatherings.

The place was especially huge, stretching from basement level 1 up to the second floor~ Venue rental is possible, and there are plenty of rooms, so it seemed great for a private gathering too~

What were the side dishes and accompaniments like?

Basic side dishes before ordering meat

Even the basic side dishes before the meat arrived felt thoughtfully prepared. At most Korean BBQ places, you expect scallion salad and ssam vegetables, but there were lots of different accompaniments here, which made it fun to try each one.

This was mala cucumber salad, haha—it was unusual, haha.

This soy-marinated crab was a special treat too, haha.

There were sauces that paired well with the meat, plus refreshing side dishes that cut through the richness, so I did not get tired of eating meat. When you go with your mom and sibling, the side dishes matter more than you might think, right? A place where you keep reaching for the sides, not just the meat, stays in your memory more, and I was happy with that aspect here.

There were especially many kinds of sauces, and this sauce was recommended by a staff member from Myanmar—then it was so good it became our main sauce!! A fresh, international flavor with a tangy lemon fragrance, absolutely bursting with umami.

How were the galbi samgyeopsal and Shrek Galbi?

First, the galbi samgyeopsal was exactly as its name suggests: the rich savoriness of pork belly with the umami character of galbi.

Galbi samgyeopsal on the grill

As it turned golden on the grill, just the right amount of fat came through and the savory aroma really filled the air.

It was delicious even with just a light dip in salt,

and much cleaner-tasting with tart side dishes.

They first let us try a piece to check the doneness, then grilled more if we wanted it, so I loved that they tailored the grilling for us, haha.

Since the meats were different, the pork belly and galmaegisal were cooked on the same grill, while the Shrek Galbi had its own galbi grill, so they switched it over. Heh.

Galbi grill for Shrek Galbi

I was curious about Shrek Galbi from the name alone, and visually it was definitely a standout dish. I heard it is sold in limited quantities.

This is Yukmong’s signature matcha-and-minari galbi. It had galbi’s characteristic gentle sweetness, but it was not overwhelmingly sweet or intense, which I liked.

It was seriously so tender, haha. I was honestly shocked with the first bite, haha. It is pork, but how can it be this tender...? We first tried the Shrek Galbi grilled with its original marinade.

They told us to try it coated in sauce once more and choose, but~ I preferred it grilled and eaten with the original marinade, haha.

Above all, having the staff grill the meat themselves was convenient because we did not have to worry about timing, and it was nice to eat slowly while chatting with my mom and sibling.

How was the galmaegisal and brisket ramen combination?

The galmaegisal, a chewy pork skirt cut, had a lovely texture and a different appeal from the galbi samgyeopsal and Shrek Galbi we had before.

Its nutty flavor built as I chewed, and compared with eating only rich cuts continuously,

having galmaegisal in the middle changed the flow of flavors, which was nice.

For the finish, we ordered brisket ramen, and it was exactly the sort of thing you crave after eating meat. The broth had the savory richness of brisket, making it feel much more substantial than ordinary ramen, and it paired well with beer too.

When you still want just a little more after the meat, finishing with ramen instead of fried rice is a good option too. Yukmong Bangi Direct Branch had good meat, but what I liked most overall was how comfortably we could eat. Thanks to the tableside grilling, even though the three of us visited together, no one had to stay busy grilling meat the whole time.

I went for dinner with my mom and sibling, but looking at the atmosphere and seating setup, it would also work well for a Korean BBQ company dinner near Seokchon Lake. If you are looking among Bangi-dong restaurants for meat quality, side dishes, and atmosphere all together, Yukmong Bangi Direct Branch is worth a visit.
