Halls' menu board. Since it's a gimbap specialist, there are tons of delicious-looking gimbap options, plus dakgangjeong and tteokbokki. Honestly everything looked so good I just stood there deliberating for ages haha.

Solo seats, cup noodle corner and terrace at Halls Gimbap

Inside Halls Gimbap Main Branch there are solo seats as well as table seats! When I visited the weather was gorgeous so they had all the doors wide open — it felt so airy and pleasant.

What goes with gimbap? Ramyeon, obviously. A corner made for people who absolutely need their noodle fix. The ramyeon a Korean restaurant cooks for you is great, but sometimes you crave cup noodles — and this option hits that need exactly!

There were also terrace seats, perfect for a nice-weather day! Eating Korean comfort food on a terrace when the weather's good? Can't pass that up! Even if it's not fancy food, if you want to enjoy the mood on a terrace on a sunny day, I highly recommend visiting — especially in this kind of season. And honestly, Korean street food hits harder on a terrace than some pricey pasta or salad. Agreed?

What goes into the protein tteokbokki with no rice cakes?

What I ordered: protein tteokbokki and the double-cheese-egg + Spam gimbap set. Insane visuals, right? A combo for people who know good food. No Korean could possibly dislike this.

Full spread of protein tteokbokki and the gimbap set

Protein tteokbokki — literally a protein bomb. Inside: cabbage, chicken, and egg! No rice cakes and no fish cakes. Gym rats, make some noise!

Close-up of protein tteokbokki with cabbage and chicken

So-good cabbage and chicken. The sauce is spicy, thick, and sweet — the textbook definition of a great tteokbokki sauce!! I don't usually say a tteokbokki sauce is delicious unless it really is, but this one was flawless. The spice level and sweetness were both just right, so I could keep spooning it up without getting sick of it.

Chicken pulled from the sauce in the protein tteokbokki

There's so much chicken in there that if you dig through the sauce, it just keeps coming. If you want tteokbokki but don't want the rice cakes or fish cakes, and you just want protein — nothing beats this. I've decided that from now on, whenever I'm craving tteokbokki while dieting, I'm coming here. It's the perfect diet-friendly substitute. Of course, if you're on a strict diet, go easy on scooping up the sauce, ha!

Egg included in the protein tteokbokki

Don't forget to eat the fluffy egg too. The sauce is so good that whatever you dip in it probably tastes amazing.

The dakgangjeong that comes with the gimbap set

Dakgangjeong served alongside the gimbap set

Dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken). The menu combo is just incredible. If you order a gimbap set at Halls Gimbap Main Branch, you also get to try the dakgangjeong!

Looks amazing, right? The batter is crispy, crunchy outside and juicy inside, coated in a sweet-salty glaze that keeps you reaching for more.

Spam gimbap vs double-cheese gimbap: which tastes better?

Cross-section of Spam gimbap with whole pieces of Spam and egg

The Spam gimbap has thick, whole pieces of Spam and egg inside. It couldn't possibly be bad — Spam makes anything good. Plus there's cucumber sliced super thin, so even people who hate cucumber probably won't mind it. If you're going to add cucumber, it has to be sliced very thin — that way you barely notice it while chewing, haha.

Cross-section of double-cheese gimbap showing cheese and egg sheet

The double-cheese gimbap is unlike any gimbap I've ever seen — so gorgeous. The egg sheet is really, really soft with a mild seasoning, genuinely delicious. The cheese is thick and has real presence, pairing beautifully with the rest of the ingredients. A perfect solo lunch at this Gyodae gimbap and Korean comfort food spot, complete!
