Namyangju café for opera cake and river views: Waltz and Dr. Mahn

In short

Waltz and Dr. Mahn is a café overlooking the Bukhangang River in Namyangju, Gyeonggi. I tried India Baba Budan Arabica Cherry hand-drip coffee, Eony & Chevalier, and opera cake amid European-style interiors and classical music. Verdict: choose a front window seat if one is available and linger awhile.

I went for a drive to Namyangju to get some fresh air. There are lots of cafés in Namyangju where you can relax while looking out at the Bukhangang River, and this time I visited Waltz and Dr. Mahn, a Namyangju café known for its river view and European-style atmosphere.

It is also certified as a Baeknyeon Gage (a century-old store), so I was curious and excited to see what kind of café it would be.

A Bukhangang River view paired with classical music

When I look for cafés in Namyangju, I personally tend to prefer places with a good view. What I liked about Waltz and Dr. Mahn was that the Bukhangang River stretches right in front of the café, giving it an open, sweeping river view.

The European-style interior added another layer, making it feel different from a typical Bukhangang River café. Soft classical music played inside, creating an overall calm, unhurried mood.

Rather than somewhere loud and bustling, it felt like a nice place to have a cup of coffee and talk, so I think it would suit a Namyangju date café too.

Outdoor terrace overlooking the Bukhangang River

Along with indoor seating, the café has outdoor terrace seating. In a slightly cooler season, it would be really nice to sit on the terrace, drink coffee, and look out at the Bukhangang River.

Especially on a nice day, it felt like the perfect place to stop by during a drive and spend some relaxed time.

A café interior that feels like Europe

Once I stepped inside, the atmosphere was even better than I had expected.

With European-style décor throughout and soft classical music playing, it felt as though I had walked into an old café somewhere in Europe.

Elegant teacups were displayed here and there in particular. It was fun to look at the pretty cups, and they suited the classic interior so well that the whole space felt even more refined.

I had come expecting a café with a Bukhangang River view, but beyond the view itself, the polished European-style atmosphere was memorable. Sipping coffee while listening to gentle classical music gave me the relaxed sense that time was moving a little more slowly. Rather than a place where you quickly finish a coffee and leave amid the noise, it struck me as a Namyangju café for slowly talking over a date or simply taking your time.

18 hand-drip coffee beans and the menu

Another thing that stood out at Waltz and Dr. Mahn was the hand-drip coffee menu. They had as many as 18 varieties of beans available.

There were all kinds of choices, from Panama beans and Hawaiian Kona to Yemeni beans and India Baba Budan beans that are not easy to find at an ordinary café. Coffee lovers would probably enjoy choosing among the beans. But because there were so many, someone like me who does not know much about beans ends up pondering what to choose for quite a while, haha.

Along with hand-drip coffee, Waltz and Dr. Mahn had a varied drinks menu, and Eony & Chevalier, which seemed to be one of the café's signature items, also caught my eye.

In addition to drinks and desserts, there were course-meal options, so it looked like a decent place to handle both a meal and café time in one spot.

Since we visited after lunch, we simply ordered drinks and cake.

After wondering which bean to try for the hand-drip coffee, I ordered India Baba Budan Arabica Cherry, something I do not normally come across. Since I had come all this way, I thought I should try a bean I would not usually choose instead of the coffee I normally drink.

The coffee had a gently noticeable acidity, and it was easier to drink than I expected. As I slowly drank it while looking at the Bukhangang River, even the time spent over one cup of coffee felt leisurely.

Eony & Chevalier piled with fresh fruit

And then there was Eony & Chevalier, which I ordered because the presentation drew me in. Topped generously with fresh fruit, it caught my eye right away.

It was colorful with not only fruit but also macarons on top, while the nuts added a savory note too.

If you like sweet things, it is a nice item to enjoy like a dessert alongside coffee.

Opera cake with coffee

For cake, we ordered opera cake. Since opera cake combines coffee and chocolate flavors, it paired nicely with hand-drip coffee.

With the first bite, I could taste the soft cake and rich chocolate flavor. It was not overly light but gently deep in flavor, and it went really well with coffee.

Taking a sip of hand-drip coffee and then a bite of cake, the cake's sweetness and the coffee's gentle acidity blended together nicely, making it easy to savor slowly as dessert. Eating coffee and cake while looking at the Bukhangang River felt more leisurely than quickly eating dessert at a usual café. Being able to enjoy the river view with a cup of coffee and good cake made this the most relaxed moment of the café visit that day.

Unfortunately, when I visited, the front window seats were already taken, so I sat farther back. But perhaps because the weather was nice that day, the windows were open, and the indoor space still felt wonderfully open.

Even from the back seats, I could see the Bukhangang River clearly, so the view was better than I expected. Still, if you want to properly enjoy the Bukhangang River view at Waltz and Dr. Mahn, I would recommend a front window seat.

If a window seat is available, I think it is best to take one at the front without hesitation. :)

A café worth stopping by on a Namyangju drive

Overall, Waltz and Dr. Mahn felt like more than a café where you just have coffee and leave. The combination of a Bukhangang River view, European-style interior, classical music, and varied hand-drip beans was what made it memorable.

In particular, looking out at the Bukhangang River over a cup of coffee made me feel as though I had stepped away from a complicated everyday life for a little rest. If you are planning a drive to Namyangju, I think it would suit anyone looking for a café with a good view, and it would also be nice when you want a date in a quiet, atmospheric place or want to enjoy coffee at an unhurried pace.

When the weather gets a little cooler, I would like to sit on the outdoor terrace next time and enjoy a cup of coffee looking out at the Bukhangang River. ☕️ If you are looking for a Namyangju café with a great Bukhangang River view, Waltz and Dr. Mahn is worth stopping by at least once.
