Gangneung café for forêt noire choco latte: Coffee Dripper
In short
Coffee Dripper is a roastery café on Nanseolheon-ro in Chodang-dong, Gangneung, run by the team that has been hand-dripping its own roasted beans in Gangneung's Gyodong since 2012 and has now moved into a newly renovated space. After a bowl of Chodang sundubu (soft tofu), the writer ordered an iced americano, coffee ice cream, the forêt noire choco latte and a chocolate croffin, and the choco latte was thick enough that a companion called it the best of the year. With a dedicated lot for about 13 cars and widely spaced tables, Coffee Dripper is an easy stop for a break on a Gangneung trip.

Nothing chases away travel fatigue like a carefully brewed cup of coffee and a sweet dessert, right? On this Gangneung trip I wanted to find a place that was genuinely great at coffee, not just pretty on the surface, so I dug through reviews carefully. That's how I landed on Coffee Dripper, a roastery café in Chodang-dong! I heard it was a deeply experienced spot that had been hand-brewing coffee from beans roasted in-house since 2012 in Gangneung's Gyodong neighborhood, now freshly relocated and renovated — so I showed up with high expectations.

The exterior draws the eye right away, with warm wood tembo boards paired against a clean white tone. Outside the building there's a generous terrace with grass and parasol seating, more than enough for a relaxed moment in the breeze.
How many cars fit in Coffee Dripper's lot? Stopping by after Chodang sundubu

The most satisfying part from the moment I arrived was the excellent accessibility and generous parking. Travelers in Gangneung almost always stop by the famous Chodang tofu village, and Coffee Dripper in Chodang-dong sits right along that route — perfect for a coffee break after a meal. Parking stress is one of the most exhausting parts of traveling, but with about 13 spots in a spacious dedicated lot right beside the café, arriving by car was really easy.

Inside Coffee Dripper: high ceilings, wide table spacing and a roasting room
Step through the door and the high ceiling gives you an immediate sense of openness. The sleek yet cozy interior, matching wood with white, put me at ease right away.

What I liked most was how far apart the tables were spaced. Unlike places that cram tables together to squeeze in more seating, this café gave real thought to comfortable, private space for groups to talk. Off to one side sits the in-house roasting room, and the coffee aroma drifting gently through the whole space lifted my mood.
How clean is the restroom at Coffee Dripper?
One quietly important factor when picking a café is the restroom, and this one was just as polished as the interior. Men's and women's are completely separate, and the sink area was kept as modern and clean as a hotel restroom — comfortable the whole time I was there.
Coffee Dripper's menu, from Geisha drip coffee to signature lattes

At the counter, the menu of this Chodang-dong café showed the depth you'd expect from an experienced roastery — everything from premium drip coffee made with geisha beans to a colorful lineup of signature drinks.

There was the dripper latte made with a white almond mocha base, the choco cone latte with its unique visual where the cone itself becomes the cup, the regionally-inspired Chodang tofu pudding, a pine needle matcha latte capturing Gangneung's pine forests, and a lemonade sunset styled after a sunset — the names alone were enough to spark curiosity. Inside the showcase sat mouthwatering baked goods too: croffins (croissant dough baked muffin-style) in black sesame, vanilla, and chocolate, plus financiers, making it genuinely hard to choose.

Wanting to taste the fundamentals of this Chodang-dong café worth visiting in Gangneung, I ordered an iced americano, coffee ice cream, and a forêt noire choco latte, plus a chocolate croffin for dessert. Everything arrived carefully plated on a wood tray, each item showing off its own charm — I couldn't help but take photos.

Iced americano at Coffee Dripper: gentle acidity, medium body
I started by wetting my throat with the iced americano. From the first sip, a pleasant acidity spread across my palate. That acidity was subtle, not sharp, and behind it a medium, substantial body held the balance firmly together — the overall balance was excellent. You could taste, right on the tongue, that fresh beans had been carefully roasted and extracted. Thanks to its cool, clean finish, it was the perfect companion to pair with the sweet desserts.

Coffee ice cream made with real espresso
Served in an adorable little cup, the coffee ice cream wasn't built on some generic store-bought base — it was loaded with espresso pulled in-house, giving it a distinctively deep flavor.

One spoonful in, it tasted like the familiar Dewisang ice cream we all grew up with, but with ten extra spoonfuls of sophistication and depth added. It melted smoothly on the tip of my tongue, leaving a rich coffee aroma lingering through the whole mouth — a menu item that really targets adult palates.

Forêt noire choco latte: the thickest choco latte of the year
And the item that moved me the most on this visit was the forêt noire choco latte. My boyfriend has firm café preferences — he only ever orders choco latte or grapefruit ade — and even after visiting most cafés worth trying this year, he hadn't found a choco latte he really loved. But the moment he tasted this one, his eyes went wide and the compliments didn't stop.
Easily the best choco latte I've had all year.

It wasn't the light taste of chocolate syrup casually stirred in — it had a remarkably thick concentration and a heavy texture. Instead of artificial sweetness, it delivered deep, rich cacao flavor, a must-order for any chocolate lover. This was the only café that passed my boyfriend's picky standards, so I was pretty pleased too.

Chocolate croffin cross-section: crisp pastry and chocolate cream
The chocolate croffin we enjoyed alongside the drinks also exceeded expectations. It looks like a cute muffin from the outside, but the moment I cut it in half with a knife, the pastry shattered with a crisp, lively crackle.

Slicing it open revealed rich chocolate cream packed completely into the hollow center — a sight that made me happy just looking at it. Crisp outside, moist inside, the bread's texture paired beautifully with the deep, not-too-sweet chocolate cream. A superb choice for indulging fully in rich chocolate flavor.

Why Coffee Dripper is worth a stop on a Gangneung trip
If you're searching for a Chodang-dong café that delivers both atmosphere and taste, I'd recommend Coffee Dripper. It runs generous group seating too, so it works well for families traveling together, and you can buy the house-roasted beans to bring the trip's lingering mood home with you. Gangneung is famous for its coffee, and personally, I actually prefer the cafés in Chodang-dong over the ones on Gangneung's famous Coffee Street! Between the friendly service, the wide, comfortable space, and above all the high level of drinks and desserts, it felt like the best rest I could've been gifted during the trip.
